Meeting Rescheduled

The rescheduled meeting of the Citizens Curriculum Advisory Committee (CCAC) tonight, January 17 at 7:00 pm, has been rescheduled for Monday, January 23 at 7:00 pm in the Administration Center Board Room. The Community Meeting that was previously scheduled for January 23 has been rescheduled to Monday, January 30, from 7-8:30pm in the Brookwood Public Library.

Community Forums to Discuss Academic Program Development in HSD

In the spring of 2016, school leaders and District staff fielded concerns from several parents of middle and high school students about advanced course offerings and overall rigor and differentiation in our high school classes. In response, staff put together a list of Frequently Asked Questions and created a plan for gathering input from teachers, students and parents throughout the remainder of the year.

 

The first step of a three-part process for making changes to our academic programs and course offerings in 2017-18 will be to hold forums where students, staff, parents and community partners can share their beliefs and values about what students deserve from their school experience in Hillsboro School District. These will occur at staff meetings, in classes, and at evening sessions during the month of September.

 

Community Forums

District-sponsored sessions for parents and community members will occur as follows:

  • Thursday, September 15, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Brookwood Public Library, 2850 NE Brookwood Pkwy
  • Monday, September 19, 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. prior to back-to-school night at Hilhi
  • Thursday, September 22, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. prior to back-to-school night at Liberty High School
  • Monday, September 26, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. prior to back-to-school night at Glencoe High School
  • Thursday, September 29, 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. prior to back-to-school night at Century High School
  • Monday, October 24, 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the District Administration Center, Room 100. Purpose of this meeting is to hear public comment regarding the October 17 panel discussion on ability vs. heterogeneous grouping.
  • NEW! Monday, January 30, 2017, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Brookwood Public Library, 2850 NE Brookwood Pkwy. Attendees will have an opportunity to view the draft 2017-18 course catalog and forecasting sheets, and ask any questions they may have about the academic program development process.

Spanish interpretation will be provided at all events.

Citizens' Curriculum Advisory Committee Meetings

Opportunities to hear perspectives regarding grouping of students—ability grouping vs. heterogeneous grouping for academic courses—will be as follows during upcoming Citizens’ Curriculum Advisory Committee (CCAC) meetings:


  • Monday, October 17, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. – CCAC Special Session: Panel Discussion. Topics: What is the debate and what are the possible solutions? (Ability grouping vs. heterogeneous grouping) Advantages and challenges of each approach? Is there a middle ground? How do our community’s shared values apply to each approach?

  • Monday, November 7, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. – CCAC Regular Meeting. Create Board report summarizing perspectives; assess solutions and pros/cons of each.

  • Monday, November 28, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. - CCAC Special Session. At this meeting, CCAC will participate in a panel discussion with current high school students about their experiences with instructional grouping, and will work to finalize a synthesis of results from the community values survey.

  • Monday, December 5, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. - CCAC Regular Meeting. Prepare a summary of findings and some recommendations to the Board on best practices for instructional grouping.

Opportunities to play a leadership role at the high school level (via Site Councils and parent organizations) can be accessed through principals:


There will be more public forums in the winter to gather feedback on proposed changes to the high school course catalog as well as forecasting protocols for students to access classes of their choice.
