STEM in the Hillsboro School District

Responding to surveys on which educational options our community wanted to expand for our students, the Hillsboro School District Board of Directors voted in May of 2011 to begin transforming certain elementary schools into science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) focus schools. In the years since, Farmington View, Groner, Quatama, and Tobias Elementary Schools have served as Hillsboro’s four STEM Transformation Schools. With guidance from the Portland Metro STEM Partnership (PMSP) and monetary contributions provided by Intel, these schools have undergone a rigorous four-year transformation process that has resulted in many benefits to students and teachers.

Goals of the Program:
  • Engaging Students: Whether it is stimulating students' imaginations through engineering design, sparking their curiosity with science, or engaging them via the exploration of natural resources, the goal of the curriculum at STEM Transformation Schools is to inspire and motivate students through active learning.

  • Developing Educators: Professional development for teachers, teacher collaboration, leadership training, and co-planning across grades are inherent and core elements in the design of STEM Transformation Schools. Partnerships with local experts have provided professional development opportunities and year-long coaching, while connections to other STEM Transformation Schools provide frequent opportunities for collaboration across the Portland metro area.

  • Enhancing Communities: Adopting a STEM theme affords a school the chance to build community around its distinct core focus. Opportunities abound for unique after-school activities, school-wide projects, or parent and community events that can be built from the theme. This sense of community can also extend to other schools with the same STEM Focus theme, and can become a resource for all schools in the District.
