School Bus Signals

Yellow Flashing Lights
indicate that the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children and will soon flash red lights. Motorists behind the bus need to slow down and be ready to stop. Motorists approaching from the opposite direction, on a road without a dividing median or physical barrier, also must begin to slow down.

Red Flashing Lights  indicate that the bus is stopping. Some buses also have a stop sign that extends out from the driver’s side of the bus. The flashers and sign mean that motorists MUST STOP before reaching the bus. This includes drivers in ALL lanes in the same direction as the bus as well as those coming from the opposite direction on a road without a dividing median. They must remain stopped until the lights are turned off, the sign is retracted and the bus starts moving again. Continue to be wary of children near the roadway.

It is illegal to pass on the right side of a school bus.

Failure to stop for bus safety lights is a Class A traffic violation. School bus drivers may report vehicles in violation. More information about motorist responsibilities may be found in the

Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles driver manual

  School Bus Safety

Did you know that every nationwide, every school day, approximately 450,000 yellow school buses transport more than 24 million children to and from schools and school-related activities. The number of students who ride a school bus is equivalent to the combined populations of Florida, Massachusetts and Oregon.

School bus drivers are an integral part of the safe transportation of school children. While the structure of the school bus provides excellent protection in the event of a crash, it is the skill and performance of the highly trained, professional school bus driver that often prevents crashes.

Please help keep our children safe by reviewing the following safety tips for students, parents - and drivers.

School Bus Safety Tips

For students:
Be alert to traffic. Check both ways for cars before stepping off the bus.
Make eye contact with the bus driver, and wait for the bus driver's signal before crossing the street.
Walk in front of the bus; never walk behind the bus to cross the street.
While waiting for the bus, stay in a safe place away from the street.
Before leaving the sidewalk, look for the flashing red lights.
Never go near or under the bus to retrieve something you've dropped.

For parents:
Have your child ride the school bus to and from school instead of driving or riding with teenage passengers.
Review the safety tips with your child regularly.
Get to know the parents of other riders. You will learn about the other children who are riding along with your child.
Team with other parents to get involved and monitor bus stops
Get to know your child's bus driver. He or she is a trained professional who sees your child every day.

  School Zones

As a driver the most important thing you can do to protect children in school zones is to slow down

Be particularly alert at all times for children and pedestrians in a school zone.

You must obey the slower posted speed limit of 20 mph in school zones:

At any time a yellow light on a school speed sign is flashing, indicating that children are arriving at or leaving school;

Between the hours of 7 A.M. and 5 P.M. on school days, as posted on signs in a school zone adjacent to school grounds; or,

At any time children are present at a school crosswalk not adjacent to school grounds, which means:Children are waiting at a crosswalk; children are occupying or walking within a crosswalk; or a traffic patrol member is present to assist children at a crosswalk.
