Hillsboro Students Showcase Spelling Skills at District and Regional Competitions

Fifty-five students from Hillsboro schools in Grades 1-6 participated in the District’s annual Spelling Contest, which was held in April at South Meadows Middle School.
Superintendent Mike Scott served as the moderator for the fourth-consecutive year – a role that requires reading each word aloud for the student competitors. .
Here’s a sample of words used as “tie-breakers,” for the steadfast spellers: illusory, catacombs, aerate, perceived, enthusiasm, nautical, beau, aerosol, outrageous, jostle, incredible, obsidian, scarce, rapport, ambit, knickers, luncheon, and absconded.
The finalists (pictured) are: Division 1: First Place: Nathan Fritsch, Jackson Elementary; Second Place: Tara Martin, Patterson Elementary, Third Place: Emma Hurlbut, Quatama Elementary. Division 2 : First Place:Mingha Law, West Union Elementary; Second Place: Adam Taylor, South Meadows MS, and Third Place: Katherine Tran, Imlay Elementary
First-place winners Nathan Fritsch and Mingha Law represented the District at the Washington County Spelling Competition - hosted by the Northwest Regional Education Service District in May. Nathan earned 3rd place in Division I; and Mingha earned 2nd place in Division II.
