Century High School Named a Mix It Up Model School
Last Updated Jul 2010
Teaching Tolerance, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, was founded in 1991 with a mission of reducing prejudice, improving intergroup relations and supporting equitable school experiences for children. Its “Mix It Up” program encourages schools and students to break out of their normal social circles and make new friends. Century was one of just 29 schools nationwide, and the only school in Oregon, to earn Model School status.
Mix It Up Model Schools embrace respect and inclusiveness as core values every day. To qualify as a Model School, each institution had to successfully complete two years of Mix It Up Day, as well as three other open activities throughout the school year aimed at reducing bullying and discrimination. In addition to holding two Mix It Up events, Century High School held Heritage Week 2009, Week of Peace 2010, Uniting to Understand Racism dialogue sessions, and facilitated an open conversation about race, heritage, stereotypes and pride with the MEChA and Unity Teams.
