Results of the May 16 election show that Hillsboro School District will have four new members on the School Board: Erika Lopez, Mark Watson, Martin Granum and Jaci Spross. They will be sworn in at the first Board meeting of the 2017-18 fiscal year, tentatively scheduled for July 11, pending current Board approval of the meeting schedule.
The following information has been taken from the candidates’ statements in the Washington County Voter’s Pamphlet:
Position 1, open as a result of Janeen Sollman’s election to the state legislature, will be held by Erika Lopez, a buyer for the City of Hillsboro. She is a product of the Hillsboro School District and also has two children who are students in the District. Ms. Lopez has been involved on the District’s Budget Committee and as a volunteer with the Hillsboro Chamber School-to-Career program, Hillsboro Parks & Recreation HillsDOer Day, and as an AARP/CASH Oregon tax preparer.
Position 2 went to Mark Watson, who will be replacing Board Member Glenn Miller. Mr. Watson is a Director of Product Management for STATS, and, with wife Ginny, has two children who attended District schools. A product of public education, he has been active on the STEM Advisory Committee, Tobias Elementary School PTO, and in the Century High School music program as well as other arts, literacy and STEM programs.
Position 3 will be held by Martin Granum, who will be replacing Monte Akers. Mr. Granum is a Facility and Park Manager with Washington County. He has been active on the District’s Budget, Curriculum Advisory, Bond Oversight, and Bond Advisory Committees, and the County’s Urban Road Maintenance Advisory Committee. His community involvement includes 24 seasons coaching youth sports, leadership in the Aloha Community Library and his church congregation, and on the Butternut Creek Elementary School PTC.
Position 6, opened when incumbent Erik Seligman chose not to run for re-election, was won by Jaci Spross, an Executive Assistant with Synopsys. Ms. Spross is the parent of a 2016 graduate of and a current sophomore at Century High School. She has held numerous leadership positions at all school levels, including PTA/Booster President, Treasurer and Secretary, and as Oregon’s PTA Region 1 Director.
