In their 2011 session, Oregon legislators passed Senate Bill 248, which opened the door for school districts to offer full-day kindergarten beginning with the 2015-16 school year. Previously, schools were only funded to offer half-day kindergarten programs to students. Beginning next year, however, schools that offer day-long programs will receive a full “weighting” for kindergartners in the state’s funding formula. Some Hillsboro Title I schools have been offering extended-day options for kindergartners by supplementing State School Fund money with Federal Title I dollars, but these were not true full-day kindergarten programs.
Therefore, next fall, all 25 Hillsboro elementary schools will be offering full-day kindergarten. There no longer will be an AM/PM half-day kindergarten option. For a handful of schools, this has presented a bit of a challenge, but our Facilities department is working with the schools to make the necessary building modifications. Kindergarten registration will open on Monday, March 2, and our annual Kinder Fair will take place on Thursday, April 2. Watch for more details on our website and in our weekly Hot News e-newsletter.
