There also will be a districtwide Kindergarten Fair on April 15, 2010, 5-8 p.m. at Lincoln Street Elementary School. All kindergartners and their families are welcome to attend--there will be fun literacy and math activities, registration assistance, vision screenings and family resource information.
Early Entry Process
The state has established procedures for individual school districts to allow limited opportunity for early entry of students born September 2 through November 15. Requirements include:
- Requests must be initiated by the child’s parent or guardian.
- Applications must be completed by May 1, 2010.
- To be eligible for early entry, students must score in the 95 percentile on the required assessment.
- Children will be assessed during the summer months.
- Families are required to pay a fee for the assessment, regardless of whether or not the child successfully achieves the required score.

Kindergarten Schedule and Placements
Kindergartners in the Hillsboro School District attend school for a half-day, either morning or afternoon schedule, Monday through Friday. The morning session will start at the same time as classes for Grades 1-6. The afternoon session will end at the same time as Grades 1-6.
For Groner, Farmington View, North Plains and West Union schools, the Transportation Department will determine your child’s placement in the morning or afternoon session in order to keep bus rides as short as possible. For all other schools, the school principal will determine your child’s placement based on a balance of class size, gender and specific learning needs.
First Day of School
Kindergartners typically start their first day of classes two days after the first day of school for Grades 1-6. Schools will notify all registered kindergartners of their appointment date and time for final orientation, which will take place before the first day of school.
Progress Reporting
The Kindergarten Progress Report Scoring Guide defines the expectations for kindergarten students based on standards adopted by the Oregon Department of Education and the sequence of curriculum and instruction determined by the Hillsboro School District. The guide defines targets for each trimester. The Progress Report indicates where the student is on the track toward meeting these targets and is meant to show improvement toward the end goals indicated in the third trimester.
