April 14, 2017 - Anne Abrams, Art Teacher at Century High School
Century High School Art teacher Anne Abrams passed away on Friday, April 14, after a long battle with cancer. From Principal Martha Guise: "Ms. Abrams was a wonderful teacher and our sincere condolences go out to her students, friends, and family. Anne made great connections with her students; her classroom was always a positive environment filled with laughter, joy, and energy. Anne had a strong passion for art. A mural painted by her students hangs in the district office. She took great pride in the achievements of 'her kids.'" A celebration of life will be held in the Century High School auditorium at 6pm on Wednesday, April 26.
April 2, 2017 - Deanna Scribner, Former Office Manager at Brookwood Elementary School
Former office manager and secretary at Brookwood Elementary School, Deanna Scribner, passed away on Sunday, April 2, due to complications from cancer. Deanna retired her position in November 2016 because of her medical condition. A memorial service will be held at the LDS Meetinghouse, 282 NE 32nd Ave. (off Brogden), on Monday, April 10, at noon.
March 5, 2017 - Al Huggett, Former Principal of Tobias, Indian Hills and Ladd Acres Elementary Schools
Former principal, Al Huggett, passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2017, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Al was a principal for the former Reedville Elementary District prior to unification. He served as principal for Tobias, Indian Hills and Ladd Acres Elementary Schools.
December 11, 2016 - John Brandl, Former Math Teacher at Glencoe High School
John Brandl was one of the original teachers when the school opened in 1980 and had perfect attendance throughout his tenure. He was humble, caring, an amazing educator, and always generously volunteered his time, especially for Glencoe's commencement programs like Baccalaureate and graduation. He would wear his tribal African dress once each year and share with his students about his time in Africa. He was beloved by colleagues and students alike and will be missed.
November 21, 2016 - Elmer Niska, Former Teacher at Several Hillsboro Schools
In the presence of his family, long-time Hillsboro educator Elmer Niska passed away on November 21, 2016, after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. Elmer began teaching at Hillsboro High School in 1962 and then spent the next 28 years teaching there and at Brown, Poynter and Thomas Middle Schools (then junior high schools), as well as Glencoe High School, as a teacher of industrial arts, power mechanics, drafting, and architectural drawing. He was also a coach of everything from track to basketball to cross country. Elmer was responsible for writing most of the District's industrial arts curriculum and also worked on the state curriculum in this discipline. After his retirement in 1990, he continued substitute teaching at all four Hillsboro high schools. A funeral is planned on December 9, 2016, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Donelson Funeral Chapel in Hillsboro (1070 West Main St.). A full military honors service will then be held at 2 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland (11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd.). Late October 2016 - Jack Zype, Former Ladd Acres Principal
Jack Zype, former Ladd Acres principal, passed away from complications of hip surgery and other ailments. Jack was principal in the early 1970s before moving to the Florida Keys around 1979. He was the brother-in-law of former Indian Hills librarian Alma Gyland, who was instrumental in bringing the first generation Apple computer to our elementary schools in the early 1980s.
October 27, 2016 - Sharon Collins, Former Educational Assistant at Evergreen Middle School
Sharon passed away on October 27, 2016. She was employed with the district for 19 years, retiring from Evergreen Middle School in June of 2016. Sharon's service will be held at Skyline Memorial Garden, 4101 NW Skyline Blvd, Portland at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 12.
August 29, 2016 - Todd Ethell, Technology Integration Specialist, Transportation Department
Todd Ethell of the Transportation department passed away as a result of a heart attack and/or aneurysm on Monday, August 29, 2016. Because he was an organ donor, Todd's tragic loss of life may result in three other lives being saved. Remembrances/condolences may be sent to his widow, Denise Ethell, at 2637 SW Mt. Washington St., McMinnville, OR 97128; and to his parents, Jerry and Connie Ethell (both former HSD staff members), at 2250 NE Grant St., Hillsboro, OR 97124. May 3, 2016 - Ryan Patrick Kautz - 2008 Glencoe High School Graduate
Glencoe High School Class of 2008 graduate Ryan Patrick Kautz died in a tragic climbing accident on Tuesday, May 3, 2016. A celebration of life will be held for him at the Scholls Valley Lodge (12840 SW River Road, Hillsboro) at 2:30pm on Sunday, May 15, 2016.
Friday, April 15, 2016 - Elden Kellar - Hall of Fame Track Coach
Legendary track coach for Hilhi and Glencoe High Schools, Elden Kellar, passed away on Friday, April 15, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 90. Elden was one of the most successful coaches in Oregon history, and was inducted into the National High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2006. He taught, coached, and counseled generations of students and helped them realize their full potential in sports and life. A recitation of the rosary will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 22, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church (475 SE 3rd Ave., Hillsboro), followed by a funeral mass. Thursday, March 3, 2016 - Marti Bradley Kufchak - Counselor
Marti (Martha) Lee Bradley-Kufchak passed away on March 3, 2016 at her home in Black Butte Ranch. Marti completed her undergraduate degree at California State University Long Beach in education, then earned an MS in counseling in 1975 at the University of Oregon. She was a counselor with Corvallis Schools for five years and a counselor with the Hillsboro School District for 20 years (Glencoe High School, 1980-89 & 1997-2000; Thomas Middle School, 1989-92; and Brown Middle School, 1992-97).

Former lead custodian Cervando Loredo passed away on Monday, January 18. Cervando was hired in 1979 and retired in 2003 spending 24 years at Poynter Middle School and he will be missed.
The Rosary for Cervando Loredo will be Saturday at 10am at St. Matthew’s Church in Hillsboro on 3rd street. There will be an open casket for viewing. The service will follow at 11am at St.Matthew’s as well, with a reception immediately following at the church.
Former secretary Robin Mekkam passed away on Saturday, January 9. Robin spent the past 17 years with the district and will be missed. Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 16, at Kingdom Hall in Forest Grove (2810 Sunset Drive) at 2 p.m. Cards may also be sent to the family at 2724 N. Barlow Court, Apt. D, Cornelius, OR 97113.
Marjorie Sandoz passed away on Sunday, December 13, 2015, while under hospice care following her year-and-a-half-long battle with cancer. Marjorie worked for many years as a counselor at both Brown Middle School and Glencoe High School. In lieu of a funeral or memorial service, Marjorie asked that the family set up a memorial website where friends and loved ones could share their memories, stories, photos, and thoughts with the family. Contributions to a favorite charity or simply getting together with a friend and celebrating Marjorie's life are other suggested ways to remember her.
Monday, November 16, 2015 - Darrell Mapston, Former Teacher at Lenox Elementary School (Retired)
Darrell Mapson passed away on Monday, November 16, 2015, after going into cardiac arrest. He spent twenty-one years of his thirty-nine year teaching career at Lenox Elementary School (1989-2010), where he taught grades 3-5. Recitation of the Holy Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, November 27, 2015, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church (39135 NW Harrington Road in Roy, OR). Family and friends are invited to attend a reception following the Mass held in the school basement, adjacent to the church. The family suggests memorial donations in Darrell's name to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
Sunday, June 21, 2015 - Leasha Lockett, Special Education Assistant at Quatama Elementary School
Leasha was hired in 2004 in the SLC at West Union and transferred to Quatama in 2011 when the SLC was moved there. She was on medical leave for ankle surgery (April - August) and was approved to return in September 2015. Her surgery in May went well; however, Leasha died of a blood clot/pulmonary embolism on Sunday, June 21. The celebration of life for Leasha will be held Saturday, July 11 at 3:30 p.m. at Shute Park. Our thoughts and sincerest sympathies are with Leasha's family, friends, and colleagues.

June J. O'Donnell, wife of Hugh J. O'Donnell (deceased 1987; Hilhi faculty 1963-1982) passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2015. Services open to all will be held at St. Edward Catholic Church in North Plains, OR, on June 1, 2015, at 11am. All are welcome afterward at Cynthia O'Donnell's house at 848 E. Main Street, Hillsboro, for food and a celebration of June's life.
Wednesday, April 22, 2015 - Ellen Holland - Former Special Education Assistant at Evergreen Middle School
Former staff member Ellen Holland died peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 22. She spent 25 years in the District, as a playground assistant at Mooberry Elementary School from 1978-1981, as an instructional assistant at Poynter Middle School from 1981-1988, and as an instructional assistant/special education assistant at Evergreen Middle School from 1988 until her retirement in 2003. A celebration of Ellen's life will take place on Saturday, June 20, beginning at 1pm at the Hillsboro Elks Lodge (21865 NW Quatama Road). Remembrances can be made to the Elks Christmas Basket Fund.

Former Peter Boscow teacher Mary Shine passed away on Wednesday, March 4. Mary spent 27 of her 33 years of teaching at Peter Boscow. Evergreen Middle School 8th grader Michael Garcia-Ixtacua passed away in a tragic drowning incident at Hagg Lake on Monday, August 25. A funeral will be held on Friday, September 5, 11am at St. Matthews Church in Hillsboro (447 SE 3rd Ave.). A reception will follow on church grounds. She was a longtime employee of the District prior to unification, having worked at both Witch Hazel (the original building) and Indian Hills Elementary Schools. Thursday, January 23, 2014 - Diane Boyles - Student Services Department
Diane Boyles passed away unexpectedly during an emergency surgery on Thursday morning, January 23. From 1999-2008, Diane worked as a secretary, regular and special education assistant at Brookwood Elementary School. In October of 2008, she moved to the Administration Center and has been working as a Director's Secretary in the Student Services department ever since. She was a sunny, vivacious person with an infectious laugh and will be missed by all of us. Diane's obituary is listed on the Fuiten Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home website. Monday, December 16, 2013 - Mary Yakutis-Suit, former Educational Assistant
Mary Yakutis-Suit of Sandy was killed in a car accident Monday night, December 16. From August 1997- January 1998, Mary worked as a Transportation Assistant for the District. She then worked at Glencoe High School from January 1998 - November 2001—primarily as an Educational Assistant (1/98-6/01), then briefly as a Special Education Assistant (9/01-11/01). A memorial will be held on Sunday, December 22, 1pm, at 22745 SE Filbert Road, Eagle Creek, OR 97022.
Tuesday, December 17, 2013 - Marcia Arganbright, former Liberty High School Principal
Former Hillsboro School District administrator Marcia Arganbright passed away surrounded by her family on Tuesday morning, December 17, 2013, ending her brief struggle with cancer.
Marcia began her teaching career in 1976 at a junior/senior high school in rural Kansas. After ten years there, she returned to her home state of Oregon and embarked upon a nineteen-year career in Hillsboro.
From 1986-1992, she taught Spanish at Glencoe High School. She also developed the first Spanish for native speakers’ class in Oregon, started the District’s first site council, and later helped draft state legislation for the certificate of advanced mastery (CAM).
She spent the next six years as an Assistant Principal at Hilhi, then took an Administrator on Special Assignment project where she was 0.5 FTE Internet Project Manager and 0.5 FTE in the Curriculum & Instruction department. In 2000, she became the Director of School Operations and Net School (the District’s first foray into online schooling), then the following two years split her time between that position and acting as Planning Principal for Liberty High School.
When Liberty opened in 2003, Marcia became its first Principal and remained there until 2005. She then spent a few months at Century High School before resigning from Hillsboro School District to lead Portland Public Schools’ Curriculum department. She retired from PPS in 2012.
A celebration of Marcia’s life will be held in the Liberty High School Auditorium on Monday, December 23, starting at 11am. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either the Hillsboro Arts and Culture Endowment Fund (http://www.hillsborocommunityfoundation.org/) or the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, 37615 US Highway 60, Superior, AZ 85173. Denny Mann passed away on Sunday November 3, 2013. Denny started his teaching career in Kansas City, Missouri in 1966. He served in Hillsboro School District from 1975 – 2003 as a Title I Migrant Teacher, Classroom Teacher, and Counselor. He worked at North Plains Elementary, Brown Middle and Hillsboro High School. The memorial service will be held Saturday, December 7 at 1:00 p.m. in the Brown Middle School library.
Former Liberty High School English teacher Elissa Nelson passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, October 30, surrounded by family and friends. Her memorial will be held Friday, November 8, 4pm at Heart of Wisdom Zen Temple, 6401 NE 10th Avenue, Portland, OR 97211. On Saturday, November 9, noon to 5pm, friends and family are invited to drop by her and Emilyn's home at 634 NE Rosa Parks Way. Please bring your stories about Elissa, pieces of her writing or any writing you would like to share in remembrance. Emilyn also invites you to bring something you might like to plant in the yard.
Eddie Kalamau, assistant football coach at Hilhi and longtime youth football coach, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, October 27, 2013. Eddie was due to start working at Hilhi as a Campus Security officer on Monday, October 28. He was previously employed at the Washington County Sheriff's Department and Intel Corporation. He is survived by his wife and four children. Additional information will be shared as it is available.
Andy Loeb, 4th grade teacher at Indian Hills Elementary School, passed away on Friday, March 8, due to complications from colon cancer. Prior to his time at Indian Hills, Andy taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades at Witch Hazel Elementary School. A memorial service will be held in the Hilhi Auditorium on Saturday, March 23, at 1:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend and celebrate the life of this beloved teacher. A scholarship fund in Andy's name is being established for students of Indian Hills and Witch Hazel. More information about making donations to that fund will be posted as soon as it is available.
Kendall D. King, 74, a resident of the Forest Grove community, died at his home in Forest Grove. He had served as a Teacher of Geography at the J.B. Thomas Junior High school for the Hillsboro School District from 1968 to 1997, when he retired.
The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions to the American Cancer Society, 330 S.W. Curry Street, Portland, Oregon 97239, in his memory.

Travis Robert Royland, 20, a student in our Transition Services program, died Tuesday morning, January 8, 2013 at Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro.
Memorial Services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2012 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Forest Grove Stake Center, 3661 Brooke Street in Forest Grove.

We have received some sad news. Brenda Lakie, health room assistant at Century High School, passed away yesterday afternoon. Brenda had been suffering from cancer and has been on medical leave. Brenda has been an employee of the Hillsboro School District since 1991. She started as a substitute educational assistant at Reedville. She was also a Library assistant at Reedville, until she accepted a position at Evergreen Middle School (EMS) as an educational assistant in 1993. She remained at EMS until 1999. Brenda then accepted a position at Century High School in 2000 as the Health Room Assistant. Brenda Lakie was a wonderful person who touched many staff and students lives throughout the district; our sincere condolences go out to her family and friends. Our district Flight Team is providing grief support to staff at Century High School today, November 20. Thank you for your support during this difficult time.
Friday, November 16, 2012--Pat Wiegand, Retired Elementary School Counselor
This past weekend, Pat Wiegand passed away peacefully with her family at her side. For those of you who did not know Pat, she was a beloved colleague to those of us from McKinney and our staff that helped open Free Ochards. Her dedicated work as a school counselor, supporting both students and staff, was a great source of inspiration and comfort to many. She will be deeply missed.

Sara Lasky, a teacher at Brown Middle School, passed away peacefully this afternoon. She had been suffering from brain cancer and went on medical leave last year.
Sara has been an employee of the Hillsboro School District since August 2004. She taught 5th and 6th grades at Brookwood until 2008, then transferred to Brown Middle School where she taught Science and Health. She was a wonderful teacher who touched many people throughout the District and our sincere condolences go out to her students, friends, and family. Tuesday, July 10, 2012--Jeff Anderson, Minter Bridge Custodian
On Sunday, July 8, 2012, long-time Minter Bridge custodian Jeff Anderson passed away. Jeff had worked for the District since 1990, spending the first seven years of his career at Brown Middle School, then moving to Minter Bridge in 1997. The school will open on Wednesday, July 11, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. so people can gather to talk and help put something together for Jeff's family. Jeff's funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 13, at Cooper Mountain Evangelical Cemetery near Miller Hill and Gassner Roads in Aloha. A wake will follow at his daughter's church
