| Ken McCoy is New Principal of West Union Elementary - Tuesday, July 05, 2011Superintendent Mike Scott announced that Ken McCoy has been selected as the new principal of West Union Elementary School.
Ken began his educational career as a fifth grade teacher at Archer Glen Elementary School in Sherwood. From there, he became a TOSA for the NWRESD; then went back to the classroom in Tigard-Tualatin. He started with the Hillsboro School District in 2005, teaching third through sixth grades at Witch Hazel Elementary School. He joined Rosedale when the school opened in 2009 and is currently a sixth-grade teacher there. He recently completed his administrative licensure program through Concordia University, with an emphasis on PBIS, EBISS, RTI, Effective Teaching Strategies, PLCs, Common Formative Assessments and Power Standards.
West Union is one of the schools where we have determined the principal position will be half-time. Ken will be based out of West Union full-time, performing .5 FTE principal duties and .5 FTE Title I duties, including coordinating Supplemental Education Services (SES) at schools that do not meet AYP. |
| New Principals - Wednesday, June 15, 2011Superintendent Mike Scott has recently announced the selection of three new principals for the Hillsboro School District: Roger Will, Mary Mendez, and Alison Paulus.
Roger Will, current assistant principal at Century High School, will be the new principal of Farmington View Elementary School, following the retirement of Bill Tracy later this month. Farmington View is one of our small elementary schools with a half-time principal position. Roger will actually be in place at Farmington View full time, performing principal duties part-time and other district duties part time. Because of Roger’s diverse background as a mental health therapist, school counselor, participant on the Statewide Credit by Proficiency Task Force and on the Hillsboro School District’s Options Committee, his district duties will focus on coordination of counselors and the Flight Team, managing portions of our Options work, and other duties as assigned.
Mary Mendez, current Dean of Students at W.L. Henry, has been selected as the new principal of Minter Bridge Elementary School. Mary began her tenure with the Hillsboro School District in 1999 as a classroom teacher at Henry. In 2004, she transitioned to be an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, and continued in that role when she moved to Minter Bridge in 2007. From 2008 to 2010, she was both an ESL teacher and also a dual language Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA), assisting with the development and coordination of the district’s dual immersion programs at Minter Bridge and Henry. She began her Dean of Students role this school year. Fluent in both Spanish and French, Mary has been a key player in our work with English language learners over the past twelve years. She has taught at our Migrant Summer School each summer and even addressed the Mexican government in 2008 on strategies for teaching non-native speakers.
Alison Paulus, current English Language Acquisition Specialist and Administrator of the Migrant Summer School Program for Salem-Keizer Public Schools, will be the new principal at W.L. Henry Elementary School. Also fluent in Spanish, Alison received her Bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology from Oregon State University, her Master’s degree in Education from Western Oregon University, and her Initial Administrative License from Portland State University. She began her educational career as a Head Start pre-school teacher in 2001, then spent five years as a 2nd and 3rd grade bilingual teacher at Hoover Elementary School in Salem-Keizer. In 2007, she became a New Teacher Mentor, and the following year was named an Instructional Coach for Richmond Elementary School, also in Salem-Keizer. She is a nationally certified trainer for Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD), and has been instrumental in coordinating professional development for instructional leaders in her district.
The current administrative team is very excited to have three such multi-faceted, skilled educators joining them as principals. |
| Administrative Changes Announced - Thursday, May 05, 2011Superintendent Mike Scott has announced several administrative changes for the Hillsboro School District.
Gus Balderas, Assistant Superintendent of Support Services, has accepted the Superintendent position at the Madera Unified School District in Madera, California, effective July 1, 2011. Madera is similar in size to Hillsboro, with 19,500 students across 26 campuses—13 K-6 elementary schools, 3 K-8 schools, 3 middle schools, 2 high schools, 3 alternative education centers, 2 charter schools and a state preschool program. “This is a great opportunity for Gus and I know he will be an excellent superintendent,” notes Scott. “I truly appreciate the leadership he has provided this district over the past 20 years and will miss him both as a colleague and a friend.”
Gus’ position will not be filled at this time. Instead the position will be moved to the Office for School Performance to assist in completing their new organizational structure. Currently, the department has four executive directors, each overseeing a feeder group. Under the new structure, there will be an executive director of curriculum and assessment – Kathi Robinson, an executive director of secondary education – Dave Parker, and an executive director of elementary education – Dayle Spitzer.
Dayle has been an educator in the Hillsboro School District since 1993, teaching science, math and literacy at the middle school level as well as teaching intermediate grades in elementary school. In 2006 she became a Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA), supporting vocabulary instruction, implementing Marzano’s effective teaching strategies and mentoring new teachers. She also worked on the technology task force and co-led the elementary curriculum coordinator meetings. Since 2007, Dayle has been principal at Minter Bridge Elementary School, successfully launching and growing the school’s dual language program and closing the achievement gap—as evidenced by the school’s nomination for an Oregon Department of Education award last fall.
The departments currently reporting to Gus will be divided between Lu Biado, Assistant Superintendent of HR, and Adam Stewart, Chief Financial Officer, with Equity and Safety reporting to Lu, and Nutrition Services, Facilities & Construction Management and Transportation reporting to Adam. It has not yet been determined whether Technology Services will report to Steve Larson, Assistant Superintendent of the Office for School Performance, or directly to the Superintendent.
Three principal positions have also been announced.
Grant Corliss, current principal at West Union Elementary School, will be the new principal of Witch Hazel Elementary School, following the retirement of Kari Woyak this June. A former student at Witch Hazel and graduate of Hilhi, Grant began his teaching career with the Hillsboro School District in 1986 as a permanent building substitute. He then moved to Yamhill where he taught K-8 physical education and coached middle school football, baseball and track for 14 years He returned to Hillsboro in 2001 as an elementary PE teacher, and in 2006 he became a TOSA. He has been principal at West Union since 2007.
Becky Brauer, current dean of students at Witch Hazel Elementary School, will be the new principal of Free Orchards Elementary School, following the retirement of Patti Wiemer this June. Becky started out teaching Spanish, math and leadership at Rogue River High School in Rogue River, Oregon in 1988. Her tenure with the Hillsboro School District began in 1991 when she taught Spanish and math at Brown Middle School. She continued as a classroom teacher at both Glencoe High School and Evergreen Middle School until 2006, when she became a TOSA and served as dean of students for W.L. Henry Elementary School. Before beginning her current position at Witch Hazel Elementary School in 2009, Becky also served as dean of students at Patterson, Ladd Acres and Imlay Elementary Schools.
Jason Olson, current assistant principal of Valor Middle School in Woodburn, will be the new principal of Lincoln Street Elementary School, following the retirement of Toni Crummett this June. Jason has been an educator for the past 11 years, working as a Spanish teacher and counselor prior to assuming administrative roles of assistant principal and athletic director four years ago. Jason is bilingual in Spanish and has a passion for empowering all students to advocate for themselves and become self-directed learners.
Finally, Loren Rogers, who has been the acting director of Transportation since February 15, will continue as both executive director of Facilities and director of Transportation for the 2011-12 school year. Loren has been with the District’s Facilities department since 2000; prior to that, he worked as an engineering supervisor for UPS, a network project manager for Fred Meyer, and a maintenance manager for Intel Corporation. |
