Accelerated Math Program
Janet
Rabe teaches Accelerated Math to students in fourth, fifth and sixth
grades. The three classes focus on higher-level math concepts and problem
solving skills. The program is completely supported by fundraisers and
donations. All students benefit from the lower class sizes in math due to
the pullout of students in the Accelerated Math Program. Most students who
complete the Accelerated Math program at Farmington View continue taking
advanced math courses in middle school and high school.
Mission Statement
Farmington View Parents for Academic
Excellence is an entirely volunteer-based parent organization that
raises funds for the accelerated math program at Farmington View
Elementary School in Hillsboro, Oregon.
The program provides the salary of a half-time
math teacher for advanced math students, significantly reducing class
size in math for grades 3-6. All math students in these grades
benefit from a low student/teacher ratio. The organization was founded
in 2001 and is a public charity under section 501(c)(3) of the tax code,
tax ID #31-1720292.

FVPAE Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is Accelerated Math?
Accelerated math is currently a part of
the math program in the upper grades at Farmington View. For grades
4,5, and 6, students have math at the same time each day. Some
students work in the homeroom, some go to the resource room, and
some go to accelerated math. Because of the extra math teacher, all
students study math in a smaller class with a lower student teacher
ratio. Students are placed in accelerated math based on test scores
and teacher recommendations. Students work at an accelerated pace
with above grade level material. The class provides the challenge
and pace that meets the needs of our accelerated students.
My child is not in Accelerated Math.
How would this affect my child?
This program allows for a smaller class
size in the homeroom, thus it allows for more individualized help
from the teacher. Students are more willing to participate in a
smaller setting because they are more comfortable, which creates a
positive math experience. Student self esteem rises and this builds
confidence in their math skills. This allows the homeroom teacher to
better challenge and meet the needs of these students as well.
How long has Farmington View had this
program? Why was it started?
The program was first implemented in
1992 with the Farmington Elementary School Board’s approval. It was
piloted for one year under the condition that it needed to impact
mathematics learning for all students in 4th, 5th and 6th grades as
measured by improved test scores and attitudes toward math. In the
testing at that time an annual growth rate in test scores was an
average of 4 points. After the first year the average growth for all
students was 7 points and the average growth for students in the
accelerated class was 21 Points. The program then became a part of
Farmington view’s curriculum. Longitudinal data shows a continued
growth in test scores and positive attitudes toward math.
What happens when students go on to
7th grade?
Each year a high number of students from
Farmington View qualify for the Advanced Pre-Algebra class at
Thomas. Students from the accelerated class as well as some students
from the homeroom class are ready to continue mathematics at an
accelerated pace. Some students qualify for Algebra and take it as
7th graders. Teachers at the middle school comment on how well
prepared the students are from Farmington View
How can I help preserve this
important math program at our school?
Please come out to our monthly meetings
and see what projects are being discussed. Volunteers are
always needed, in any capacity, including helping with planned
events, corporate donations, grant applications, brainstorming, etc.
