Career Preparation

Career Related Learning Experiences
Century, Glencoe, Hillsboro and Liberty High Schools are members of the Western Washington County School-to-Work Consortium, which is operated through the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce.  Students have access to career exploration and work-based learning opportunities with businesses in the tri-county area.  School-to-Work opportunities are coordinated through the school’s Career Center.

Career-Related Learning Experiences provide opportunities for students to connect classroom learning with life experiences in the community, workplace, or school.

Structured Work-Based Learning provides students with opportunities to apply academic and career-life knowledge and skills in the work environment, to take increased responsibility, and to acquire a more realistic understanding of the world of work.  These experiences are closely linked to the student’s classroom learning and require an application and approval through the Career Center.  Examples:

Service learning in the community provides structured experiences in thoughtfully organized community service activities that meet actual community needs.  Projects are designed collaboratively by the student and the community and are closely linked to the student’s classroom learning.  Example:

School-based experiences provide hands-on application through projects, student-managed business enterprises, and other activities on campus.  School-based experiences engage the student in complex, real-world problem solving that is academically rigorous, relevant to students and the community, and empowers students as active learners.  School-based experiences are structured and closely linked to student’s classroom learning.  Examples:

Career Development Credit

The Career Development Credit is a .5 credit given for completion of career guidance activities. There is one activity per academic year with the option for more exploration.

In grade 9 students complete an interest inventory on the Career Cruising website. It also can be accessed from home at www.careercruising.com.

In grade 10 students do a career and/or college search.

In grade 11 students complete a resume and job shadow/informational interview.

In grade 12 students complete a senior meeting to discuss their post secondary plans. When the student has completed all acitivities they receive the .5 credit as a senior.

Informational Interview:
An informational interview is an opportunity for students to ask pertinent questions focusing on a career and/or occupational interest.  The duration is typically an hour or less, and the interview can take place in person, over the phone, or via email (in agreement with the business participant.

Prerequisites:
Résumé with a clear objective indicating career interest
Opportunity request form
Genuine interest to learn about a particular occupation

Job Shadow:
A job shadow provides students with the opportunity to spend three to eight hours with one or more employees at a business.  This is an observational experience but some hands on opportunities may be provided.

The job shadow is conducted in person and students must provide their own transportation to and from the worksite.

All students enrolled in CAM's MUST complete a job shadow during the junior year.

Prerequisites:
Résumé with a clear objective indicating career interest
Opportunity request form
Genuine interest to learn about a particular occupation

Internship:
Internships, or Structured Work Experience (SWE), allow students to apply classroom theories to practical problems, and to explore career options at the work-site. Students are selected through an approved school program and typically work 5-10 hours per week. SWE may be paid or unpaid, may occur in public, private or non-profit organizations, may or may not result in academic credit, and requires no obligation on the part of the work-site employer to offer regular employment to the student, subsequent to the SWE.

An internship consists of 30 to 40 hours with any one employer.

Please see the Counseling Center for more detailed information.
