For the first time, the state will require that all students must demonstrate that they are proficient in certain “essential skills”—skills that are deemed critical for future success – before they are awarded a diploma. Beginning in 2012, students must demonstrate their proficiency in the Essential Skills gradually as follows:
Beginning second semester, 2011, Glencoe counselors will be assigning current juniors who have not passed their state assessment in reading, math or writing to a tutorial class designed to support the students in meeting this essential skill requirement. Expectations for the tutorial class is like every other academic class in that students must attend every class and put in the effort in order to be successful and meet their graduation requirements.
Please don’t hesitate to contact your student’s counselor should you have any questions about the graduation requirements or your student’s individual graduation plan.

AVID Classes Offered at Glencoe High in 2011-2012
Glencoe is one of two high schools in the Hillsboro School District with the honor of offering an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) elective class. The AVID class is dedicated to helping students achieve their goal of going to college. The class, held within the regular school day, provides support, academic monitoring, and tutoring. Writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading, along with tutorials and study skills are the core strategies of the class. Students must apply, interview and be accepted before enrolling in the elective. We are currently accepting applications for next year’s 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. If you believe your son and/or daughter would benefit from being in AVID, please contact your school counselor immediately for an application.
