April 2009Ace of Cakes a success at Hilhi! In a school-wide effort to begin incorporating more project based learning activities into our classes, Ms. Stevens and Ms. Grether created a project for their geometry students modeled after the Food Network's "Ace of Cakes" competition. Themes for the cakes included weddings, music, sports, birthdays, quinceañeras, and other celebrations. Groups were required to design and build a model of their cake. Most of the groups designed a cardboard model, but some groups chose to bake a real cake. Students then used volume and surface area calculations to figure out how many people their cake would serve and how much frosting they would need to decorate it.
