Hillsboro High School Awarded $1.2 Million Smaller Learning Communities Grant from the U.S. Department of Education

Earlier this month, Hillsboro High School (Hilhi) was awarded a $1.2 million grant to continue to strengthen and provide an academically rigorous learning environment that prepares all students in grades 9-12 for success in high school and post-secondary education and careers. Hilhi was one of approximately 50 schools nationwide to receive this award from the U.S. Department of Education.

"On behalf of the Hillsboro School District, Hilhi staff and students, we are thrilled to receive this award," Hilhi principal Sloan Presidio said. "This grant will allow us to expand opportunities for student learning and academic success through more personalized learning communities. We will use the funds to strengthen existing programs that are closely aligned with our District's Strategic Plan and offer new innovative programs and academic supports for students," he said.

One of the major grant initiatives is the expansion of Hilhi's International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, which offers 11th and 12th graders an opportunity to earn an IB Diploma. Through strong collaboration between Hilhi and its feeder middle school, (J.B. Thomas in 2008-09, and South Meadows in 2009-10) the IB Middle Years Program will be implemented for all students in grades 7-10.

The IB Middle Years Program provides a strong academic foundation, through a thematic, inter-disciplinary approach to learning. With a continuous, enriching academic program in grades 7-10, the partnership will equip more students with the skills to enroll and be successful in the IB Diploma Program in 11th and 12th grades.

With a focus on high academic achievement and high expectations for all students, comprehensive guidance and personalized academic advising services for students and their families will be provided through the grant. All students will receive individual assistance in selecting courses and planning a four-year program of study that supports their academic goals and future success. In addition, families will receive information on obtaining and applying for financial aid for post-secondary education. Hilhi will also increase opportunities for students to earn post-secondary credit through International Baccalaureate courses or dual-credit programs through Portland Community College.

To ensure the successful implementation of the grant initiatives, professional development will be provided for Hilhi staff to support them in achieving the goals of the grant - ultimately creating a more personalized learning environment for all students.
