FFA Participates in Rose ParadeThe Hilhi FFA Chapter participated in the Rose Festival Parade on Saturday, June 12th. The students did a great job and received several compliments as well as 2nd place in their division. They have already been asked to apply again next year. Kim Bliss Receives National AttentionKim Bliss, a local teacher from Hillsboro High school, has been selected from a national applicant pool to attend one of 20 summer study opportunities supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Endowment is a federal agency that each summer supports Landmarks of American History and Culture workshops so that teachers can study with experts in humanities disciplines. Read more--> |

Students Win at Future Tech Skill Competition!Jalen Kohen and Jordan Grittman won the Future Tech Auto skills competition and went to New York to compete at the national level. Jalen and Jordan won 9th place out of 30 teams from all over the United States and some teams from Canada. They competed in two days of testing in New York and each won about $20,000 in scholarships and prizes. Read more--> |

Heart Watch Field TripTRiO Talent Search/Project P.L.U.S. students from the four Hillsboro High Schools, had an opportunity to participate in our most advanced educational opportunity on Monday, February 1st, "Heart Watch" an open-heart surgery viewing at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. "Hello, Dolly" & "Noises Off" Coming to Hilhi Theatre"Noises Off" - Apr. 23-24 and Apr. 30-May 1, 2010, 7:30 pm Hilhi Theatre, Tickets $6 students/seniors, $7 adults Oregon Youth Challenge ProgramFive Hilhi students attended and successfully completed 5 months at OYCP (Oregon Youth Challenge Program)-a residential, military model school. Through the program the boys learned self-discipline, self-respect, and so much more. The dinner was to honor their accomplishments and to show our continued support as they work toward graduating this year. January 2010
Spartan Jazz Band Takes 1st Place at NWOC Jazz Competition!Thursday, January 21, 2010 the Hilhi Spartan Jazz Band took first place at the NWOC Jazz competition held this year at Sherwood High School. This is the second consecutive year. They tied for 1st with a score of 152 with Wilsonville High School. Having the trophy from last year's 1st, the Hilhi Jazz band let Wilsonville take this trophy home to their school. Congratulations to Century Varsity Jazz Band that took 2nd place. Read more--> Yaron Gottri Plays at HilhiA special concert performance by Conductor/Composer/Pianist Yaron Gottried was performed for Hilhi students on Tuesday, January 26th. He played for all of our music students on the Grand Piano in the Choir Room. He will also be answering questions and offering to our students what the possibilities are for our music students. Hungry Howie's Pizza Provides FoodHungry Howie's Pizza in Aloha provided pizza for all students and staff on Wednesday, January 6th in honor of the 5A State Championship Football title. Thanks to them for their support and generousity in making this accomplishment so special for our school. December 2009Hilhi Wins State Championship!Congratulations to our Varsity Football who are the 5A State Champions after defeating the Jefferson Democrats 20-6 at Reser's Stadium on Saturday. The last time the Spartans won a state championship was in 1973. Perfect Attendance for Trimester 1!We have 26 students with perfect attendance for the first trimester! Way to go! Mouse Davis and Mark Neffendorf Speak at Pep AssemblyMouse Davis who coached the 1973 Championship Football team at Hilhi and Mark Neffendorf was Quarterback were guest speakers at the Hilhi Pep Assembly, Friday 12/11 before our championship game. They were both very inspirational to the student body and the team. Mouse went on to coach at PSU, and then continued his success as a NFL coach and a USFL coach. Mark went on to coach and is now the principal at Tigard High School.
Liz Avalos Named Rotary Student of the MonthLiz Avalos was recently awarded student of the month by the Hillsboro Rotary Club. She was selected for her academic achievements, leadership skills, and her service.

Mecha Leadership InstituteMecha Leadership Institute took place at PCC/Rock Creed on Friday, Nov. 13. 30 students and 10 advisors from the four Hillsboro high schools and Evergreen middle school participated as well as 17 other area schools. Mecha promotes academic standards, community service and cultural awareness. Little Spartan Preschool DedicationThe Little Spartan Preschool playground got a face lift this summer to help reconnect children with nature and improve development. Brianna Roach in the NewsBrianna Roach, Hilhi's Sparrow Child two years ago was recently hailed as a community hero. She is still fighting cancer and refuses to give up! Way to go Brianna! Hilhi has the Coach of the Year, Athletes of the YearKen Ingram came to us from Aloha HS where he was an assistant for 5 years. Students Accepted to WOUCongratulations to these students who were admitted to Western Oregon State U. through our on-site admissions process. This process entailed Hilhi students meeting with 4 admissions representatives who visited Hilhi's campus for two days Read more--> Padres HispanosHilhi had another successful Padres Hispanos night, last Thursday night, with 85 parents in attendance. Our parents learned about graduation requirements, the benefits of parental engagement and school home partnerships, and the role School Boards play in the education system, highlighted by keynote speaker and inspiring school Board Member, Adriana Cañas. Financial Aid PresentationA financial aid presentation for all seniors was made during advisory on 11/17. A presenter from NELA (Northwest Eduation Loan Association) came out to talk with our seniors about finding money for college. She gave a general overview of the FAFSA (free application for federal student aid) as well. Following up with this senior meeting, on the same evening, our senior parents joined us for a financial aid presentation made by NELA. November Spartan HeroGriselda Casillas, was selected as this month's "Spartan Hero." Spartan Hero's are a part of Hilhi's PBIS program The Spartan Hero is an opportunity for students who are exhibiting Spartan PRIDE characteristics at a very high level. On a monthly basis, teachers and staff nominate students they believe are Spartan Hero's. The nominations are brought to the Operations meeting, made up of the administrative team, activities department, and the athletic department. Nominees are discussed and winners are chosen. Spartan Hero's are given a certificate and a prize package. Sparty our school mascot presents the Hero these items and a picture of the winner is displayed on the Spartan PRIDE bulletin board in the commons. Griselda was selected as our Spartan Hero for her work leading an art and puppet/drama program for youth in community. Greselda is in the school's IB program and continually challenges herself to prepare for college. Greselda is an excellent campus role model. Class of 1959 Donates $300 to Library!Fifty years after graduating from Hilhi, the Class of 1959 generously donated $300 to the Hilhi library for books about Oregon! Band 2009-2010 Marching SeasonThe Hilhi Band had an extremely successful marching season Placing 3rd in their division at the Championships this past Saturday in the Prelims, and finishing 14th in the OPEN Division! We ended the season as one of the top 5 bands in our division! Read more->
Spartan TimeEvery Thursday Hilhi students take advantage of academic support time known as "Spartan Time". During Spartan Time teachers are available for individual assistance, Hilhi's Math Lab is open for tutoring, students can work on group projects together, make up tests, or complete assignments. Spartan Time is one of the academic support systems Hilhi is employing to improve student achievement. Band Competes at OSUThe Hilhi Band competed in Championship Competition last weekend at OSU. In preliminary competition, Hilhi placed third place in the single A class which qualified the band for Finals competition. The band was able to it's best despite the severe weather experienced this weekend. Congratulations to Mr. Fotland and the band! Construction Technology
Students in John Stables Construction Technology class are constructing a soils bin to support the work of Hilhi's Horticulture program. The bin will store soil and other materials used to support the ongoing improvements to the landscaping on campus. Prior to the actual construction work students completed the necessary drawings and mathematical computations.

Touch the FutureThis event is designed for students of color who are interested in going to college but have not visited a college campus. The students had an opportunity to meet with Pacific University faculty, administrator and students; they also took a campus tour and participate in work sessions. Homecoming Parade Draws a Big Crowd
Turnout High for Senior Project Parent Night!The Senior Project Parent night had a great night with over 50 parents participating. The total student enrollment in the four programs represented is over 90, and we saw over half of the parents! Way to go Focused Programs!

Hillsboro High School finishes 8th in the prestigious Oregon CupHillsboro High School capped off an outstanding athletic and academic school year by finishing 8th in the state in the 5A OSAA Oregon Cup. Hillsboro High School won 4 league championships and finished 2nd in state in boys swimming and also placed 4th in state in boys basketball and wrestling. Academically, Hillsboro High School also enjoyed its best year ever with 10 of their varsity teams finishing in the top 10 based on GPA's and their boys basketball team winning the state championship in the OSAA Diary Farmer's All State Academic Team. This honor lead to the overall 8th place finish in the OSAA end of the year Oregon Cup standings.

Sixty incoming Hilhi freshmen participated in a three-week summer program designed to ensure a smooth transition to high school. Students learned valuable academic skills, self-management strategies, and participated in community service projects to become acquainted with their peers and build a strong foundation for their freshman year at Hilhi.
