• As a part of the Hillsboro Online Academy family, you will hear the term "Canvas" in daily conversation.  What is Canvas?  Canvas is our new Learning Management System (LMS) we are using to deliver our curriculum to our students.  It is our virtual school building.  Important school-wide messages are posted in the Announcements for all active members to see just as a bulletin board would be visible to staff, students and their parents in a traditional school.

    Once logged into the Canvas site, students are able to access their classes and assessments, as well as communicate with staff and other students.  In addition to class work, students are able to view their current progress and grades in each of their classes. 

    Parents are strongly encouraged to create an Observer role view their student's information, including grades and course activitiy logs.

Hardware & Internet Requirements

  • Students enrolled with Hillsboro Online Academy will have a district Chromebook checked out.  Students are required to use these computers for classes, testing, and state assessments.

    The Technology Department has implemented a new policy regarding all district-issued Chromebooks, chargers and styluses that are checked out to students.

    • Loss or damage of a charger that requires a replacement charger for a student will result in a fee of $40.
    • Continual repair or replacement of Chromebooks due to damage, neglect, loss, theft, and vandalism will result in a fee being charged.
      • Damaged Chromebooks should be reported to the building immediately to initiate the repair or replacement process.
      • Each student will be allowed one replacement Chromebook OR two Chromebook repairs prior to fees being charged.
        • 3rd repair is $75
        • 4th repair is $150
        • 2nd replacement is $400

    In addition to a computer, when taking an online course, there are several key things to make sure that the student has in place like a reliable Internet connection, back up systems and even a printer. A conscientious online student may even want to ensure that he or she has a back up plan in place in case of computer or internet failure.

    My course says that there are plug-ins like Shockwave, Flash, or Quicktime do I really need to download them?
    You do need the plug-ins listed for a class but you may not need to install them.  If you are using a District Chromebook, they are already loaded for you.  If you are using a home computer, you most likely already have them installed so try the course first and then if you run into something that needs the plug-in install it then.  As always call or email us if we can help.

    Do I need to buy Microsoft Office to take HOA classes?
    No, you do not.  

    By logging in to Google with their District email and password, students have access to Google Apps like Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive.  For more information on Google Apps, including how to access your account, please refer to "Intro to HSD Google Accounts."

    Another option available to all students of Hillsboro School District is the ability to install Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook in up to 5 PCs and Macs and get Office apps for their mobile devices for free!  To install, students must log into their district email.  Once logged in, look for the alert bell in the top right corner and the "Microsoft Office for free" message.  Click on Install now and follow the prompts.
