What is AVID?
-
AVID is an in-school college preparatory program designed to assist students in rigorous courses. Its goal is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. In AVID, students learn study skills, focused notes, time management, organization, test readiness, critical thinking, writing to learn, and group study skills. The AVID curriculum is used in content area classrooms as well as in the AVID elective class.
The AVID elective is a year-long elective support class for students who are determined to attend college and are “in the middle” academically. With extra supports they receive, AVID students are better able to reach their academic potential. AVID targets students with a 2.5-3.3 GPAs and seeks out students who may be “first in family” to attend higher education. These students are capable of completing a rigorous curriculum but need support to reach their potential. AVID guides students toward challenging courses, including honors and Advanced Placement classes.
Open recruitment for the AVID elective takes place in the spring.
