Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve Partnership

Overview

Farmington View students continue to benefit from our partnership with Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve through a project called “Science In Our Community: From the View to the Slough.”  The purpose of the project is to increase student achievement in science, math and technology through research and study of water quality, weather, and aquatic life, specifically related to the Tualatin River watershed and the Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve.

The partnership between Farmington View and Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve is in its fifth year and is touted as a model project for environmental education. Students are able to learn about the flora and fauna of the wetlands from experts in the field and visit the Preserve to study and conduct research. Our goal is to teach investigative skills through scientific inquiry and promote environmental awareness. There are opportunities for students to participate in service learning projects, a Junior Naturalist Club, and spring break and/or summer camps.

In addition to field experiences and traveling outreach programs, a new day camp program for 4th and 5th grade students will be developed this year. Students will also continue planting shrubs in “Bobcat Marsh” to help increase the population of rare Northern Red-Legged Frogs. A Research Symposium will be held in the spring to celebrate learning and showcase the experiments and other science projects of our students.
