If you are on this page you are definitely digging into our website, thank you! As the year progresses I will try to keep this page updated with info about events, photos of teachers and students, and just some fun things for you to look at. Right now there is not much going on, in fact it is just me here in the office, and my head custodian, Rachel, trying to get the building in shape fore teachers to come back in late August! So I'll fill this page with just a bit of info about me, some you may have heard and some not.
As the home page stated, I just returned from a 3 week trip to Uganda, Africa. This was my second trip to the Village of Hope, a school and orphanage for former child soldier refugees. If you are interested in learning more, the website is villageofhopeuganda.com There are other places in the world that have the name "Village of Hope", but this organization is independent, founded in 2008 by a woman named Cindy Cunningham. You can learn more on the website or I'm more than happy to chat with you about it!
While there I worked with staff on student engagement strategies, note taking, and academic student discourse. I hope to return next July to do some more work with them and see what changes have been made. I'm looking forward to sharing some of my experiences with students and staff here at North Plains and possibly set up a pen pal relationship with a grade level or two. Students there are taught in English, the official language of Uganda, so our students will be able to correspond with little difficulty.
I've been with Hillsboro School District since 1998 when I was hired to be the activity director at Glencoe High School. While at Glencoe I also taught Algebra, Statistics and Discrete Mathematics, Tech Math, and basic math. I loved working at Glencoe, but when the opportunity came to do an admin internship at Evergreen Middle School, I was eager to apply. Laurie Lewis, principal of EMS at the time, took a chance on me and I worked with her and Don Brown as my mentors. In the fall of 2003, Superintendent Joe Rodriguez called me and offered me an assistant principal position at Thomas MS under then principal Mario Alba. In 2009 we took all of the existing staff at Thomas and opened South Meadows Middle School. In 2013 I was hired as the principal of SMMS, and this year of course transferred here to North Plains.
I've had the opportunity to work in the building a few times this past spring and am inspired by the commitment and dedication of both staff and parents. Students are eager to learn and have a positive attitude. I have no doubt that I will love it here, and I promise to serve the North Plains community with the best I have to give.
If you are interested in being a part of the North Plains PTO, I will have a sign up available at both the picnic with the principal on the 25th of Aug., as well as Back to School night on Sept. 15. My understanding is that a few parents have taken on the bulk of the work over the past few years and we really need some more parents on the team. Even if you can't commit to a once a month meeting, it would be great to have more people available to help with events.
I hope you have a great rest of your summer and I look forward to meeting you soon!
