Free screenings available for elementary students
Starting in September, the District will conduct vision screenings for students in grades K, 1, 3 and 5, in partnership with the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation.
The students will be screened with the Spot Vision Screener, which takes a measurement of the refractive power of the eyes to detect possible vision issues. The Snellen vision wall charts of the past will only be used on absentee make-up days.
Oregon House Bill 3000 (effective July 1, 2014) requires that students ages 7 and younger who are beginning an educational program have a vision screening or provide proof of both a screening/eye examination and the receipt of recommended follow-up care/treatment (if necessary), unless the family has claimed a religious exemption.
Hillsboro School District's annual vision screening meets these requirements.
