May 4-8, 2020 - Building Demolition

  • Demolition continues on the main building ahead of schedule. Board members Lopez, Spross and Watson were joined by Superintendent Scott on Friday, May 8, to get their "bites" in on the kindergarten wing of the old building.

The process started on Monday, May 4, as Principal Caldwell initiated the first bites on the rear wing adjacent to the developing new school

May 1, 2020 - Portable Demolition

  • The farewell to the old Brookwood has begun. Unfortunately, coronavirus-related restrictions prevented a formal good-bye.

Demolition had already started on the covered play area when the playground and then the portables were taken down. In their place will be the new synthetic turf field for the new Brookwood school. Preparation for the demolition of the existing building is expected to begin on Saturday, and actual demolition starting next week for the next several weeks.

  • Testing of a manufacturer's window ensures the product passes the air and water leakage requirements. To test air leakage, a pressure differential is applied to the window. For the water test, 8 inches of rain and 41 mph (gale force) winds are simulated for 15 minutes against the window (this represents an unusual, very heavy rainstorm). The product passed both tests. Watch this video to see how the testing was done.

April 29, 2019 - Groundbreaking

  • Families, staff and community members enjoyed the spring sunshine as they celebrated the official launch of the project to build a new replacement school for Brookwood Elementary.

One of the common themes for speakers Dr. Michelle Jensen, Board member Erika Lopez, teacher Barb Nasewytewa, and student Carly Hernandez was to look forward to a modern learning environment in a bright 73,700 square-foot, two-story building and new play fields. The $40.5 million invested from the 2017 Bond will enable the school to accommodate up to 600 students in the growing community.

Fourth-grader Carly is especially looking forward to being in the first class of sixth-graders when the school opens for the 2020-21 school year.

Another theme was the gratitude to all who made this possible, from the district leaders and the project staff who were involved in the early planning and design, to the community and voters who approved this investment in education.

Construction is expected to begin on May 1, 2019, and continue through August 2020.

Have we found the time capsule buried by Brookwood first-graders in 1999? A metal detector scan by our facilities staff seems to indicate so. Although we can't open it until Dec. 16, 2019, we will be digging it up on Friday, Nov. 2, at 8 a.m., in advance of the construction for the replacement school. Brookwood alumni and families are especially invited to attend - let's see what we find!
