  • Letters from Dr. Michelle Jensen and Supt. Mike Scott Regarding New Interim Principal at Brookwood: Emily Caldwell

    August 1, 2019

    Dear Brookwood Staff and Community,

It is with mixed emotions that I write this letter to let you know that I will be leaving Brookwood Elementary School, effective immediately. An opportunity recently presented itself to me that will allow me to work closer to home and to begin a new chapter of service in my educational career. I have accepted the job as principal of Boones Ferry Primary School in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District.

While I am very excited about this change, my heart is heavy as I transition. I will miss being a part of this team and working with all the fantastic students, staff, and families here. Brookwood is a truly wonderful place to work and learn, and I am forever grateful to have been a part of this community. You will always hold a special place in my heart.

Superintendent Scott will share information about next year’s leadership of Brookwood in a separate correspondence. I feel confident that our students will continue to be in good hands, being supported and guided by your new principal, an excellent staff and passionate parents. I deeply appreciate everyone who has worked hard to ensure that all Brookwood Bobcats reach their highest academic and social potential during my three years here as principal. It has been an honor to work alongside you and I know you will continue to accomplish great things.

    Dear Brookwood staff and families,

As you just read in Dr. Jensen’s letter, she has accepted a position in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District and will be leaving Brookwood Elementary School. Because it is so close to the beginning of school and because we want to have the opportunity to conduct a robust selection process for Brookwood’s next principal, we have decided to appoint an interim principal for the 2019- 20 school year: Emily Caldwell, currently dean of students at Witch Hazel Elementary School.

Ms. Caldwell began her educational career student teaching at Glencoe High School and Poynter Middle School, before securing a position at Reynolds High School teaching English, Reading, and Journalism. She remained at Reynolds for eleven years, spending her final year in an administrator practicum both there and at Quatama Elementary School here in Hillsboro. From 2014 to 2017, Ms. Caldwell was the dean of students at Liberty High School, where she collaborated with building administration to lead teacher professional development, partnered with the Student Equity Team to provide equity trainings to staff, and served as the acting administrator for the Freshman Academy in 2016-17. She transitioned to her current role at Witch Hazel in 2017. At Witch Hazel, she has had responsibility for attendance and delivering professional development on trauma-informed practices, and also served on the leadership team, among many other duties.

Supporting Ms. Caldwell this year will be retired HSD administrator Grant Corliss. Mr. Corliss has more than 30 years of experience as a teacher, building administrator, and central office administrator. His most recent role was executive director of schools, where he oversaw sixteen of our 25 elementary schools, including Brookwood. In the early spring of 2020, we will conduct a process to select the permanent principal. Please join me in welcoming Ms. Caldwell to Brookwood Elementary School and congratulating her on her new position.

Principal's Message

  • Emily CaldwellHappy winter, Brookwood!

Welcome to December! The year is flying by and it has been such a pleasure getting to know all of you and your students. I see wonderful things hapening at Brookwood every day and I love watching our students learn. Our new building is coming right along; it is so exciting watching the changes, seeing how quickly it is taking shape, and imagining the amazing learning that will take place there next year.

A few quick remidners for the winter season:

    - Be sure to send your student with a warm jacket every day. Students are expected to participate in recess outside and we want everyone to be warm and comfortable! Be sure to write a name inside; our lost & found is piling up with coats I'm sure families do not want to be lost!

    - If your child is staying home sick, be sure to call the attendance line and report symptoms.

    - Please be aware that the roads and crosswalks can be slippery even when they look dry. Take extra care when driving through the school zone on Cedar, and especially in our parking lots.

Thank you for sharing your children with us!

    Emily Caldwell, Interim Principal
