Featured Event: Mural Unveiling at West Union Elementary School

West Union Elementary School invites the community to view its amazing new mural - a labor of love and learning that has spanned the last two school years. 

In the spring of 2023, 4th grade teacher Kim Harrington submitted a grant application to the Hillsboro Schools Foundation (HSF) for her proposal titled: “This is Where we Belong,” which envisioned the completion of several art-based projects designed to highlight West Union’s new logo and build community with students, staff, and families. Happily, Harrington was among the awardees and received a grant of $5700 to begin her projects in the fall. 

One of the permanent art installations was to be a huge mural along the school’s breezeway. Harrington reached out to Susan Curington - a local artist whom she had met several years prior while Curington was doing a different project - to see if she might have interest and availability to design and create the mural. 

“I had just finished painting a mural in a private home,” Curington recalls, “and it wasn’t ten minutes later that I got a text from Kim asking if I would be interested in doing a mural at her school! I immediately said yes.”

The mural at the private home was big - 9’x15’ to be exact - but the mural at West Union would be much bigger at 9’x42’!

Curington specializes in painting botanicals and Oregon landscapes, and she knew the idea was to create a sense of place that was grounded in realism but that still felt whimsical. She met with each classroom of students, Kindergarten through 6th grade, to see what they loved about the community and about the world around them. 

Curington asked the students: “When you’re in nature, what do you do? What makes you happy?” 

She began building her vision from there, making sure to include trees, flowers, grasses, insects, and animals that are native to the area. Of course, she also had to include some wolverines - the school mascot! 

The first step, though, was to prime her large “canvas,” which was done with the help of several family and community members in February 2024. It was at this stage that students got to have their first hands-on experience with the mural: every single student had the chance to add their signature and/or a message in the primer coat!

“I wrote my name and ‘I love West Union!’” exclaimed 4th grader Niharika. 

Helping Curington along the way were several 6th grade interns. Their jobs ranged from research to journalism and photography to being an artist assistant. 

Best friends Erika and Charlotte explained how they and other interns helped Curington two to three times per week painting, taking pictures, and helping younger students participate. When asked what they learned, they popcorned “contrast, color mixing, shading, blending, texture, realism.” Both indicated they had always loved art, and that this experience has made them more confident. 

While she conceded feeling slightly intimidated to take on such a large project and work so closely with young students, Curington said the endeavor has been “a satisfying, enriching experience that has taught me I have infinite patience for children.” 

The involvement of every single student in the school - and even some alumni - in the project was one of the most rewarding aspects. 

“Susan truly has gifted our community with a legacy in this mural,” says Harrington. “She has selflessly given of her time and talents to create a beautiful and meaningful experience for everyone. Some of our most impacted students have been able to see the calm and beauty in art, and every day - as a new creature, detail, or aspect of the mural is completed - brings whispers and squeals of joy from staff and students alike. We cannot begin to repay Susan for her time, as her ‘payment’ doesn’t even begin to cover the dedication and hours she has given to our school. It is incredible.” 

UPDATE: Due to inclement weather in February, the mural unveiling will now take place on the same night of the West Union Community Carnival on Friday, March 7. Susan will be there from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the carnival will begin at 5 p.m. She will also be at the school concurrently with The Right Brain Initiative on Thursday, April 17 from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Evento destacado: Inauguración del mural en la Escuela Primaria West Union
La Escuela Primaria West Union invita a la comunidad a ver su nuevo e increíble mural, que es un trabajo de afecto y aprendizaje, el cual se ha extendido durante los últimos dos años escolares. 

En la primavera de 2023, la maestra de 4.o grado, Kim Harrington, presentó una solicitud de subvención a Hillsboro Schools Foundation (HSF) para su propuesta titulada: «Aquí es donde pertenecemos», que tenía la visión de completar varios proyectos artísticos diseñados para resaltar el nuevo logotipo de West Union y fomentar el sentido de comunidad en los estudiantes, los miembros del personal y las familias. Afortunadamente, la maestra Harrington estuvo entre los galardonados y recibió una subvención de $5,700 para comenzar sus proyectos en el otoño. 

Una de las obras de arte permanentes sería un enorme mural a lo largo del corredor de la escuela. La maestra Harrington se puso en contacto con Susan Curington, una artista local a quien había conocido varios años antes mientras Curington trabajaba en otro proyecto, para ver si tenía interés y disponibilidad para diseñar y crear el mural. 

«Acababa de terminar de pintar un mural en una casa privada», recuerda Curington, «y apenas diez minutos después recibí un mensaje de texto de Kim preguntándome si estaría interesada en hacer un mural en su escuela. Inmediatamente respondí que sí».

El mural de la casa privada era grande, 9 pies x 15 pies para ser exactos, ¡pero el mural de West Union sería mucho más grande, 9 pies x 42 pies!

Curington se especializa en pintar paisajes botánicos y de Oregón, y sabía que la idea era crear una sensación basada en el realismo pero que también fuera fantasiosa. Se reunió con los estudiantes de cada salón de clases, desde kínder hasta 6.o grado, para saber qué les gustaba de la comunidad y del mundo que los rodea. 

Curington preguntó a los estudiantes: «Cuando están en la naturaleza, ¿qué hacen?, ¿qué los hace felices? 

Comenzó a construir su visión a partir de ahí, asegurándose de incluir árboles, flores, pasto, insectos y animales nativos de la zona. Por supuesto, también tenía que incluir algunos glotones (wolverines), ¡la mascota de la escuela! 

Sin embargo, el primer paso fue imprimar su gran «lienzo», lo cual se hizo con la ayuda de varios familiares y miembros de la comunidad en febrero de 2024. Fue en esta etapa que los estudiantes tuvieron su primera experiencia práctica con el mural, ¡cada estudiante tuvo la oportunidad de agregar su firma o un mensaje en la capa de imprimación!

«Escribí mi nombre y “¡Me encanta West Union!”», exclamó Niharika, estudiante de 4.oo grado. 

Varios pasantes de 6.o grado ayudaron a Curington en el proceso. Sus trabajos iban desde la investigación, el periodismo y la fotografía hasta ser asistentes de la artista. 

Las mejores amigas Erika y Charlotte explicaron cómo ellas y otros pasantes ayudaron a Curington dos o tres veces por semana a pintar, tomar fotografías y apoyar a los estudiantes más jóvenes a participar. Cuando se les preguntó qué habían aprendido, mencionaron «contraste, combinación de colores, sombras, mezclas, texturas, realismo». Ambas indicaron que siempre habían amado el arte y que esta experiencia les ha dado más confianza. 

Si bien admitió sentirse un poco intimidada al asumir un proyecto tan grande y trabajar tan estrechamente con estudiantes jóvenes, Curington dijo que el esfuerzo ha sido «una experiencia satisfactoria y enriquecedora que me ha enseñado que tengo una paciencia infinita para los niños». 

La implicación de todos los estudiantes de la escuela, e incluso de algunos exalumnos, en el proyecto fue uno de los aspectos más gratificantes. 

«Susan realmente ha otorgado a nuestra comunidad un legado con este mural», menciona la Maestra Harrington. «Ella ha donado desinteresadamente su tiempo y talento para crear una experiencia hermosa y significativa para todos. Algunos de nuestros estudiantes más influenciados han podido ver la calma y la belleza en el arte, y cada día, cuando se completa una nueva criatura, detalle o aspecto del mural, genera susurros y expresiones de alegría tanto de los miembros del personal como de los estudiantes. No hay manera de pagarle a Susan por su tiempo, ya que su «pago» ni siquiera alcanza para cubrir la dedicación y las horas que ha destinado a nuestra escuela. Es increíble». 

ACTUALIZAR: Debido a las inclemencias del clima en febrero, la inauguración del mural ha sido reprogramada. Ahora, se llevará a cabo durante el evento del Carnaval Comunitario de West Union, el viernes, 7 de marzo. La artista, Susan, estará presente de 4:00 p.m. a 8:00 p.m. y el carnaval comenzará a las 5:00 p.m. Además, Susan participará en un evento en la escuela junto con The Right Brain Initiative el jueves, 17 de abril de 4:00 p.m. a 7:30 p.m.
