Why is it named 'Atfalati Ridge?'
In a survey process from May-July 2020, community members were asked to nominate names for the school and, subsequently, vote on their preferences. "Atfalati Ridge" was ultimately selected and approved by the School Board in October 2020.
This name honors the Atfalati people, as they referred to themselves, a northernmost band of the Kalapuya Native Americans living along the Tualatin River in present-day Washington County. The North Plains and Helvetia areas were significant hunting, gathering and trading areas for them.
Native culture is being incorporated into the school design. The project staff have been working closely with a team comprising the cultural manager of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde, the manager for the District's Title VI (Native American and Alaska Native Education) program, and representatives from DLR Group, the architects of the school, to develop culturally-significant motifs in the school's finishes. These include murals and other graphics as well as quotations from tribal members that will be interspersed throughout the building.
