Dental, Vision and Hearing Screenings

Free screenings available for elementary students

A Dental Screening is required by law for incoming kindergarteners and new students 7 years of age or younger and who are beginning an educational program (including pre-k) for the first time (ORS 336.213).

Vision Screening to begin in late September
Starting in September, the District will conduct vision screenings for students in grades PK, K, 1, 2, 3 and 5, in partnership with the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation.

The students will be screened with the Spot Vision Screener, which takes a measurement of the refractive power of the eyes to detect possible vision issues. The Snellen vision wall charts of the past will only be used in special circumstances.

If the student results show an abnormality, we will send out a referral letter to the parent recommending a consultation with an eye doctor.

Oregon House Bill 3000 (effective July 1, 2014) requires that students ages 7 and younger who are beginning an educational program have a vision screening or provide proof of both a screening/eye examination and the receipt of recommended follow-up care/treatment (if necessary), unless the family has claimed a religious exemption.

Hillsboro School District's annual vision screening meets these requirements.
For more information or if you would like to opt your child out of the screenings, please talk to your school’s office manager or call the District’s Vision Screening Team at 503-844-1748.

Hearing Screenings to begin in February
Starting in February, the District will conduct hearing screenings for students in grade 1 and 3.

Parents will be notified by mail if their child did not pass the screening. An explanation of results along with resource information for possible consultation with a hearing specialist will be included in that notification.

Results for all students screened will be placed in the health section of the students’ cumulative file. For more information or if you would like to opt your child out of the screenings, please talk to your school’s office manager or call the District’s Hearing Screening Team at
