Families are our most important partners in helping students succeed in Dual Language. Whether you speak English, Spanish, or another language at home, there are many ways to support your child’s growth as a bilingual learner.

This section includes tips, tools, and community resources just for you.

 

At-Home Language & Literacy Tips

You don’t need to be bilingual to help your child succeed in a bilingual program! Here are a few simple ways to support language and literacy at home:

  • Read aloud with your child in any language — it builds vocabulary and connection
     
  • Encourage your child to talk about what they learned at school in both English and Spanish
     
  • Label everyday items around your home in both languages
     
  • Listen to music, watch movies, or cook recipes together using Spanish
     
  • Ask your child to teach you a new word or phrase they learned at school

The more your child uses both languages at home and school, the stronger their bilingual brain becomes!

Workshops, Events & Support

Hillsboro School District offers ongoing opportunities for families to connect, learn, and celebrate language and culture.

Examples of Family Engagement Opportunities:

  • Dual Language family nights and literacy celebrations
     
  • Bilingual workshops on how to support reading and writing at home
     
  • Middle and high school info sessions to learn about academic pathways
     
  • Newcomer family events for families new to the U.S. or the school system

Resources for Immigrant Families

We understand that navigating a new school system can be overwhelming. Hillsboro SD is here to support you.

Support includes:

  • Help with school enrollment, transportation, and translation
     
  • Workshops on understanding the U.S. school system
     
  • Referrals to immigration support organizations and legal clinics
     
  • Printed and digital resources on student rights, health care access, and housing
     
  • Support from our bilingual family liaisons

What is Title III?

The Dual Language Program is supported by Title III, a federal grant that helps schools meet the needs of students who are learning English and supports immigrant students.

Title III funds help us:

  • Provide bilingual classroom resources
     
  • Offer staff training on best practices for multilingual learners
     
  • Run family workshops and newcomer events
     
  • Purchase language learning tools and digital programs

These services are offered at no cost to families.
