Enrollment in Dual Language Programs

We’re excited that you’re considering Dual Language for your child! Our program is open to families who want their children to become bilingual, biliterate, and successful in a multicultural world.

Who Can Apply?

Any family in Hillsboro School District can apply, regardless of the language spoken at home.

We welcome:

  • Spanish-speaking families who want their child to keep and grow their home language while becoming fluent in English
  • English-speaking families who want their child to become bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English
  • Multilingual families who value cultural pride and language development

You do not need to speak Spanish at home to join the program. Many of our most successful Dual Language learners come from English-only homes!

How to Apply: The Lottery Process

Because we receive more applications than available spots, new students are accepted through a lottery system.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Submit your application online or at your neighborhood school during the enrollment window.
     
  2. Students are entered into the lottery.
     
  3. Families will be notified of placement or waitlist status.
     
  4. If selected, students are placed in the Dual Language Program at your school.

Priority is given to create a balanced mix of English- and Spanish-dominant speakers.

HSD offers Dual Language programs across:

  • 8 Elementary Schools
  • 4 Middle Schools
  • 4 High Schools

Requesting a Transfer to a Dual Language School

If your child is currently enrolled in Hillsboro School District and you would like to transfer them into a Dual Language Program school, you may submit a Transfer Request Application during the designated transfer window.

Who Can Request a Transfer?

  • Families new to the district after the lottery deadline
     

  • Students currently enrolled in HSD who wish to join the program at the appropriate entry point (usually Kinder or 1st grade)
     

  • Spanish-speaking students with previous DL experience who wish to re-enter the program

We recommend that students begin the program in kindergarten or 1st grade to get the full benefit of the language model.

How the Transfer Process Works

  1. Complete the In-District Transfer Request Form on the HSD website
     

  2. Select a school that offers Dual Language
     

  3. The district will review available space and language balance
     

  4. You will be notified if your child is placed or waitlisted

Transfers are not guaranteed and depend on space, program balance, and staffing at the requested site.

Transportation

At this moment, transportation is not available for in-district transfers. Contact our office or transportation department for more information.

Family Commitment to the Program

Dual Language is a long-term commitment. Students make the most progress when they stay in the program from kindergarten through 12th grade.

We ask families to:

  • Support daily attendance

  • Encourage both languages at home

  • Attend family events and workshops

  • Stay in the program for the long term to ensure the best results

Do I need to speak Spanish for my child to succeed in this program?
No! Families of all language backgrounds are welcome, and we provide tools to help you support your child’s learning at home.

Will my child fall behind in English?
No. Research shows that Dual Language students keep up or outperform peers in English reading and writing by the upper grades.

How do I get help with the application?
You can contact your school office, call our Dual Language team, or attend an information night. We’re here to help!
