The beam signed by the community on Oct. 12, 13 and 15 is lifted, placed and welded to the entry area of the school building's structure. Although it will be eventually covered up as construction continues, the beam will lie overhead as visitors enter the building and will be an importance piece of the school's history.

Martin Granum, School Board member, started the event with an acknowledgment recognizing the Atfalati indigenous peoples' land. School Board Chair Erika Lopez provided remarks about the significance of ES28 to the North Plains and district community, describing special features of ES28, which joins the existing North Plains Elementary in educating the city's students. City of North Plains Mayor Teri Lenahan highlighted some historic aspects of North Plains education, noted the partnership between the city and the district, and the importance of the new school to a modern education for our children.

Highlights from the community beam signing:

An update to the Board on the name finalist for ES28, "Atfalati Ridge," can be viewed on the Board's meeting video for the Oct. 13 work session.

David Harrelson, the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde, speaks to the Board about the history and culture of the indigenous people of the area.

Daria Bingham, Title VII Native American Program Manager for the District, shares feedback from the Native American Parent Advisory Committe.

Casey Waletich, Chief Operations Officer, also provides information on the upcoming mascot selection process.
