The process started on Monday, May 4, as Principal Caldwell initiated the first bites on the rear wing adjacent to the developing new school
The farewell to the old Brookwood has begun. Unfortunately, coronavirus-related restrictions prevented a formal good-bye.
Demolition had already started on the covered play area when the playground and then the portables were taken down. In their place will be the new synthetic turf field for the new Brookwood school. Preparation for the demolition of the existing building is expected to begin on Saturday, and actual demolition starting next week for the next several weeks.

Testing of a manufacturer's window ensures the product passes the air and water leakage requirements. To test air leakage, a pressure differential is applied to the window. For the water test, 8 inches of rain and 41 mph (gale force) winds are simulated for 15 minutes against the window (this represents an unusual, very heavy rainstorm). The product passed both tests. Watch this video to see how the testing was done.
In the meantime, construction continues on the exterior and interior of the building. The following video provides the latest update.
Sheathing is complete around the exterior walls of the building. Watch the time-lapse video of construction so far, starting Aug. 1, then take a look at an inside view of the building.

Photo 1: workers smooth out concrete after it is poured into the foundation frame for the new building. It is a finely-choreographed routine that includes moving concrete into empty spaces, monitoring the proper depth, roughly smoothing with a wooden board, and then finely smoothing with a special tool.
Photo 2: an aerial view shows the area being worked on. The crew has to work quickly after the concrete is poured.
Photo 3: an aerial view of the whole foundation and building site. Building of the structure will begin shortly after all the concrete has been poured and cured (hardened).
Footings have been filled with concrete. Crews are trenching to install utility pipes and conduit.
Crew members construct the forms for the foundation footings in section B as others add and compact gravel around the set footings in section A.

Photo 2: the area housing the former kindergarten portables has been demolished
Concrete is poured into the footings for the building foundation. Crews smooth out the pour and continue to finish reinforcing the forms.
Crews work on excavating the foundation for the building:
The site for the new building is being filled with gravel, graded and compacted.
The construction area has been fenced off and equipment is being mobilized. The walkway on the south and west sides of the campus helps ensure that pedestrians are separated from the staging areas and vehicle traffic. For your safety, do not enter the fenced-off construction areas.
Families, staff and community members enjoyed the spring sunshine as they celebrated the official launch of the project to build a new replacement school for Brookwood Elementary.
One of the common themes for speakers Dr. Michelle Jensen, Board member Erika Lopez, teacher Barb Nasewytewa, and student Carly Hernandez was to look forward to a modern learning environment in a bright 73,700 square-foot, two-story building and new play fields. The $40.5 million invested from the 2017 Bond will enable the school to accommodate up to 600 students in the growing community.
Fourth-grader Carly is especially looking forward to being in the first class of sixth-graders when the school opens for the 2020-21 school year.
Another theme was the gratitude to all who made this possible, from the district leaders and the project staff who were involved in the early planning and design, to the community and voters who approved this investment in education.
Construction is expected to begin on May 1, 2019, and continue through August 2020.
DLR Group, architects for the new Brookwood Elementary School, has produced a virtual tour of the building.
Time Capsule Found!
Nov. 2, 2018 - The time capsule buried by first-graders in 1999 was unearthed. Due to damage to the container, the contents had to be retrieved earlier than directed by the students, and will be displayed at the school. Read more.
Brookwood Elementary School Time Capsule (1999)
Have we found the time capsule buried by Brookwood first-graders in 1999? A metal detector scan by our facilities staff seems to indicate so. Although we can't open it until Dec. 16, 2019, we will be digging it up on Friday, Nov. 2, at 8 a.m., in advance of the construction for the replacement school. Brookwood alumni and families are especially invited to attend - let's see what we find!
Brookwood Alumni Encouraged to Submit Photos
June 11, 2018 - Are you an alumnus of Brookwood? We’d like to create a database of photos and memories from students who attended the school over its 65-year history. If you have things you’d like to share, please e-mail them to Bond Marketing Specialist Jane Siguenza at siguenzj@hsd.k12.or.us or by mail: 3083 NE 49th Place, #201, Hillsboro, OR 97124.
