2018 - Turf Field and Track
Video: Hilhi Ribbon-Cutting
On Wednesday, Oct. 3, current and former Hilhi students, staff, and community members gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the completion of the school’s new lighted seven-lane track and turf field, one of the projects made possible by HSD's 2017 bond.
The track and turf field will be used by a variety of Hilhi athletic and activity groups, and will also be valuable recreational resources for the broader Hilhi community.
Hilhi Principal Dave Vickery, Hillsboro School District Superintendent Mike Scott, School Board Member Martin Granum, ASB President Vincent Felder, Jr., Athletic Director Steve Drake, and Hillsboro Mayor Steve Callaway addressed the crowd, praising the facility and noting the benefits to students and broader Hilhi community.
Drake, a staff member at Hilhi since 1984, recalled that preparing the “cow pasture” for use by athletic and activity groups used to involve deciding between “mowing it or rototilling it!” The field has certainly come a long way since then.

The track surface has been installed and the areas around the field have been hydroseeded. Striping of the track is expected to begin the week of Sept. 3.
The shot put area has been filled.
The gravel base layer has been completed on the inside of the field, ready for installation of the synthetic turf.
The long jump pit is being filled with sand as crews continue to work on laying down the gravel base for the turf field. The asphalt on the track has been wetted down to see if/where ponding occurs; these areas will need additional work to ensure an even surface before the track's rubberized material is installed.
The free-draining base stone is being laid over the geotextile and field underdraining system. This helps to keep the overlying turf from ponding and allows excess water to drain into the stormwater pipes surrounding the field..
The track was paved with asphalt on July 20 to provide a base for the rubberized surface that will be installed.

Construction continues on Hilhi's new turf field and track. Contractors are completing the final concrete forms around the field. Gravel has been laid on the track to prepare for installation of the track surface.
Lights were installed around the new field. The video clips are at 8x actual speed - installation of each pole took only about 10 minutes from lift to placement.

Cement treatment was applied to Hilhi's field to reinforce and prepare the ground for the turf installation.
Construction of Hilhi's new turf, track and lights project began in early June 2018. Ground has been cleared and the shape of the track can be seen. The project is expected to be completed by late August 2018.
