• New School

A new elementary school, now named Tamarack Elementary School (formerly with a working name of "ES29"), was completed and opened to students in fall 2023 in the south Hillsboro area. This was the final major project of the 2017 Bond. The site is approximately eight acres, located at the northeast corner of SE Kinnaman Road and SE Reed Drive. The building is approximately 73,500 sq. ft., with two stories and capacity for 600 students.

The original plan was to open in fall 2022; however, recent enrollment projections indicate that Rosedale Elementary School can continue to serve as the home school for the anticipated student population in this area through the 2022-23 school year.

Construction was accomplished in two phases. Phase 1 comprised site work that took place in summer 2021 and finished in December. This included excavation, grading, installation of underground utilities, rock compaction, and other earthwork. The parent dropoff/parking lot and staff parking lot were built with base asphalt and parking lot lighting bases. Construction also added curbs, ramps, sidewalks, and retaining walls as well as junction boxes, relocated streetlights, sidewalks, and driveways on the site frontages.

Phase 2 started on March 1, 2022, beginning construction of the school building and completion of remaining site work, including installation of the synthetic turf, covered play area, playground equipment, landscaping, and the final asphalt and concrete work. 

In late March 2022, a community survey and naming task force process was started to determine the official name for ES29, with the School Board ultimately selecting Tamarack in October 2022. Rosedale and Witch Hazel students were surveyed in October 2022 to propose the mascot for the school. 

In early 2023, a public boundary process was undertaken to evaluate surrounding HSD school attendance areas and carve out the Tamarack attendance boundaries. Boundaries took into account the potential student demographics, transportation routes, etc. 

After completion in August 2023, the school is expected to address the enrollment growth that will eventually result from development in south Hillsboro in the coming years. The building was modeled on the prototype design of the Brookwood Elementary School replacement and Atfalati Ridge Elementary School (orientations and site placements of the campuses differ). The learning street inside the building is distinguished by murals representing the seasons of a tamarack forest. Another special feature is the installation of solar rooftop panels to satisfy the state's green energy requirements for the bond; visit the production website to view solar output.

The district also owns additional properties in the South Hillsboro area and, subject to passage of a future bond measure(s), tentatively plans to add two to three other elementary schools, a middle school and a high school on these properties to create a new feeder system to serve the area. The timing and details of these plans are currently undetermined, and would be several years down the road. The final scope will depend on any bond funding approved by the voters in years to come.
