September 14, 2020 - High above W.L. Henry Elementary School’s new gym, the experienced sub-contractor team fit insulated panels, one-by-one like puzzle pieces, to form the roof of the gym. Every five minutes or so, a crane was loaded with a panel and lifted it to the rooftop. A member of the team would guide the panel to its place. Then, together, the team lowered the panel, jiggled it to fit, and secured it to the structural steel. In all, they installed 72 panels in about ten work-hours. Watch how they did it.
With the roof now installed, work can progress to completing the clerestory window sheathing and glazing, as well as constructing the interior walls and concrete benches. Work has already begun with framing the mezzanine and entry vestibule areas.
This crew also worked on the roof installations for the new gyms at North Plains and Minter Bridge Elementary Schools, currently under construction, as well as Eastwood’s gym, completed in January. And that’s just Hillsboro School District’s projects—they have been involved in other districts’ gym construction, too!
Construction of separate gymnasiums fulfills HSD’s bond promise to relieve the crowding at elementary schools that have had to share gym and cafeteria space for multiple uses (no more gymacafetoriums!). With Eastwood and Mooberry gyms already completed, and three more coming on-line soon, students can look forward to using their shiny new gyms when they physically return to school. Brookwood’s gym is also another beautiful facility that is part of its new building.
Not only will the schools’ PE classes have their own spaces separate from cafeteria uses, but the gyms will provide much-needed recreational basketball and volleyball facilities for our community youth. Also, because they are built to “immediate occupancy” seismic standards, they can serve as emergency shelters in the event of a major earthquake.
Over the coming months, the District will have even more PE and community facilities as more gyms start to be erected at Jackson, Ladd Acres and McKinney Elementary Schools. Stay updated at hillsboro-bond.org.
