HSD Family University Grand Reopening

March 8, 2018 - On Tuesday, March 6, our HSD Dual Language Family University Program, better known in our community as FAMU, had its grand reopening with over 60 families in attendance. DL FAMU is a parent engagement program that offers a wide range of educational opportunities, in English and in Spanish, to all families with students enrolled in our schools. DL FAMU also offers tutoring services to students K-12, preschool classes for students in ages 3-4, leadership and community service opportunities to students 7-12, childcare services for children under 3 years of age, and a variety of workshops to provide parents with tools and strategies to support their students academically, in a bilingual and non-bilingual setting.

After its foundation in the Summer of 2011, FAMU ran uninterrupted offering 2-3 sessions per year, until the Spring of 2015, one year after its expansion from serving exclusively migrant families, to become a Dual Language Family University program, providing language and cross culture learning opportunities to parents and students, in English and in Spanish.

Our mobile DL FAMU program was hosted in many of our elementary schools; Lincoln Street, Patterson, Reedville, Minter Bridge,  and W.L. Henry just to name a few. This year, our beloved DL FAMU has finally found a permanent home in South Meadows Middle School, to continue to serve our HSD community in its regular schedule Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00-8:00pm.

You are all cordially invited to join our DL FAMU community either to take a Spanish or an English class, donate volunteer time, teach or take a workshop, or just to take a tour and enjoy this wonderful community of HSD parents, students, and volunteers who meet twice a week to invest in their education and support each other in making our community stronger and united in bilingualism and biculturalism!
