October 26, 2020 - After several phases spread across two years, Hilhi’s last bond renovations to its buildings were completed last month, with landscaping improvements coming soon. Until he can host an open house for the community, Principal Dave Vickery provides a virtual tour of the latest work at https://bit.ly/37w6mBA.
While the exteriors look essentially the same, it’s the interiors and underlying infrastructure that have been dramatically improved. Every building at Hilhi was renovated, including: HVAC, seismic and security upgrades; new lighting; and new classroom furniture. The project began in spring 2019 with the first two phases of renovations comprising improvements to the business education and creative arts buildings as well as the gym, and a new weight room (taking over the existing health science classroom).
Work was accelerated in late 2019 to ensure completion by September 2020. This was when the “Spartan Estates” portables were brought to campus to house classes impacted by the final two phases.
Renovations in the second, and final, year of Hilhi’s bond project included: language arts, math/science, and drama/music buildings; media center; main office; and the cafeteria and commons areas. About 2,000 square feet were added to the automotive technology space. The main parking lot was redesigned; both the main and student parking lots received fresh coats of asphalt and striping.
Vickery exclaimed, “These renovations have revitalized our school,” which was built in 1968, “and allow Hilhi to serve our students and community for decades more to come.”
Hilhi’s $36.7 million in renovations, furniture, technology, and the 2018 installation of a new turf field were made possible by the 2017 Hillsboro School District bond, passed by voters in November 2017, with the goals of enhancing existing infrastructure and safety, providing a modern education experience for students, and building for the future.
