Bleacher Repair Collaboration
November 11, 2019 - At sports and recreation fields across the District, there are several sets of bleachers that have fallen into disrepair and become a safety concern. But this did not look like a problem to retired welding and fabrication teacher Rob Brauer - who has returned to work part-time in the District’s Facilities department - it looked like an opportunity.
Rob worked for more than 30 years at Glencoe High School, teaching thousands of students how to weld, use machining equipment, and other “shop” skills before retiring in June of 2018. Never one to slow down, however, it wasn’t long before he came back to the District to help out in the Facilities department.
Taking his place at Glencoe was social studies teacher Todd Patterson, someone whose skill-set lay more in the construction trades, which was the impetus for bringing a construction program to the school. Todd’s construction classes have been packed for the past two school years, and he now has second-year students whose skills are at the point where they could take on bigger projects.
So Rob reached out to Todd, his former colleague and friend of many years, and asked if his second-year students might be interested in helping to repair the bleachers.
The students would prepare and replace the wooden seats and kick-plates and Rob would fabricate new metal railings and install fencing on the sides and back.
Todd’s answer was yes without hesitation.
So on Wednesday, October 30, Facilities staff began gathering up bleachers and taking them to Glencoe. Rob is helping Todd oversee and mentor the students as they work through the project, and refurbished bleacher sets are being completed daily.
By all accounts, the collaboration has been a great success for both the District and the students.
“New aluminum bleachers cost over $10,000,” Rob notes. “So the District is saving a ton of money by refurbishing the ones we have, and students are learning valuable skills along the way.”
Todd continues: “I try to give my students projects that not only show them how what they’re learning connects to the real world, but that are interesting to them. When they’re able to be a part of something where there is a clear objective and an end product that will be used in their school district - well, there’s just no substitute for that.”
The refurbished bleachers will be heading to baseball, softball, and other fields around the District.
Earlier this school year, Glencoe High School - and Todd’s program in particular - was recognized by the Paxton/Patterson (no relation!) organization as a Distinguished National Best Practice Showcase Site.
Paxton/Patterson provides kit-based curriculum for a large number of career-technical topics that are aimed at getting students involved, engaged, and, ultimately, college and career ready. Todd’s construction program utilizes Paxton/Patterson materials.
In November of 2018, Todd hosted an event where teachers and administrators from around the area came and observed Glencoe students using the Paxton/Patterson building skills lab. Todd also gave a presentation about how he implemented the curriculum at Glencoe. Throughout the year, he hosted teachers from districts around the state to observe his program as well, and Todd continues to be a requested speaker about his experiences with the curriculum.
Congratulations to Todd and to Glencoe High School for this prestigious honor!
