Important Message from Superintendent Scott and Board Chair Erika Lopez
May 31, 2020 - Superintendent Scott and Board Chair Erika Lopez reaffirm District’s stance on anti-racism and providing safe and welcoming spaces for all with the following letter to families and staff:
May 31, 2020
Dear Hillsboro School District Families and Staff,
As we prepare to celebrate the accomplishments of our seniors and the promise their future holds, we are sadly once again confronted with the tragic and needless death of a person of color. We are an organization that is working toward moving beyond identifying and addressing institutional racism to becoming an anti-racist educational system. The Hillsboro School District condemns the death of George Floyd, a black man, that resulted from a senseless use of violent force in which Mr. Floyd pleaded for his life while he was pinned to the ground.
We know that our students and staff, especially those of color, face incredible challenges. It is not enough to celebrate diversity. We must take actions that remove inequities and biases in our system and that create safe and nurturing environments. Though we have much work to do, we remain committed to creating a school district in which all students can thrive and that values and honors the distinct needs of our students of color.
We are highly concerned about the traumatic impact that events of this nature have on students and staff. In a time when we are physically separated from our students, it can be difficult to provide opportunities to discuss emotional events in an environment where they can process their feelings and trauma with peers. Please know that our school administrators, counselors, and staff continue to work tirelessly to provide support for our students. Please contact your principal if your family needs additional support at this time.
While we say goodbye to our seniors and begin preparations to welcome new students next fall, we must continue to strive for a better future. A future that continually addresses the biases and racial assumptions that hurt people of color and includes structures that begin to heal the wounds of racism. A future in which we dedicate ourselves to uniting against violence and the oppression of others. An inclusive future in which all voices are elevated and valued.
We look forward to standing with our community to create this future for our current students and the students we will serve for generations to come.
