Hillsboro School District & City of Hillsboro partnership will triple the number of students served
More than three times as many students in the Hillsboro School District (HSD) will have access to after school programs during the 2021-22 school year as part of an expanding HSD partnership with the City of Hillsboro.
Building on years of collaboration to host BLAST after-school programs, HSD and the City are teaming up to serve more students and low-income families with affordable after school programs at eight Hillsboro elementary schools – Free Orchards, Lincoln Street, McKinney, Minter Bridge, Mooberry, Reedville, Rosedale, and Witch Hazel – beginning in September.
"By combining resources and contracting with highly qualified third-party providers, the City of Hillsboro and the Hillsboro School District will launch an unprecedented expansion of after school programming, growing from approximately 320 HSD students in the past to more than 1,000 students served going forward," said HSD Assistant Superintendent Travis Reiman.
The new K-6 service model will see HSD contract with Champions, an established care provider with a history of serving Hillsboro students, in lieu of a City-run program. In doing so, the new program will provide more consistent after school opportunities, expand service to kindergarteners, overcome transportation barriers, and serve children who have the greatest need.
"We are grateful to our partners at the Hillsboro School District for working alongside us to increase equitable services within our community and to more than triple the number of students who can participate in after school programming near their own neighborhood," said Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Director Dave Miletich. “We are also grateful to our BLAST program staff who have laid the foundation for this expanded program. Their work and passion for serving the community contributed to the City’s desire to partner with HSD to expand equitable after school programming.”
Over the next three years, the City of Hillsboro will provide $1.2 million in support to HSD for the after-school expansion. The funding combines American Rescue Plan Act dollars and the General Fund budget historically utilized by Parks & Recreation for after-school programming. An Inter-Governmental Agreement goes to the City of Hillsboro Finance committee on August 10, then to City Council for approval on August 17, 2021.
HSD's new service model will serve all elementary schools beginning this fall with on-site after school programming. Additional information is available at www.hsd.k12.or.us/afterschool or by contacting your child’s school; registration opens August 16.
