Featured Event: Six Schools to Launch Elementary Track Programs
January 16, 2018 - Thanks to a generous grant of $15,000 from Nike through the Oregon Community Foundation, and in-kind support from Providence Health Systems, HSD will be launching an Elementary Track program at six schools this spring. The programs will allow students in grades 4-6 an opportunity to train for the 100M, 400M, 1200M, turbo javelin and long jump events in preparation for a full-scale meet at Hare Field at the end of May.
Executive Director of Extracurricular Activities and Community Outreach, Rian Petrick, delivered ceremonial checks of $2,500 to Brookwood, Eastwood, Free Orchards, Lincoln Street, Reedville, and W.L. Henry Elementary Schools last week, and is very excited about the new programs.
“As we strive to know students by name, strength, and need, part of our work is to provide a variety of programming to keep students engaged throughout their time with us,” he explains. “While there are several opportunities at our high schools, we know our pipeline needs strengthening at the elementary and middle school levels.”
Another goal is to involve high school students, not only to help with supervision and the running of drills for the various events, but also as a way to better connect with the participants and to enrich their own experience.
The grant money will allow each school to hire a coach and to purchase t-shirts and equipment. Then, as practices begin after spring break, representatives from Providence will visit the teams to talk about health, wellness, and nutrition, and to conduct pre-assessments that will be followed up by post-assessments at the end of the season to show students their growth.
