TREX Plastic Film Recycling Challenge
Ever wonder what 437 pounds of plastic film looks like? To Lincoln Street Elementary School it just might look like winning! Their school was the host site for PlanetCon on Saturday, Jan. 6, and plastic film recycling was one of the activities. They will capitalize on this great start to their recycling efforts and try to win the TREX bench—will you let them?
January 16, 2018 - The TREX Plastic Film Recycling Challenge is back! Last year, HSD collected over 7,000 pounds of plastic, keeping it out of the landfill and allowing it to be made into other products like composite lumber.
From now through Sunday, April 15, 2018, Students, staff, family, and friends are invited to bring in clean plastic bags and plastic wrap to designated bins at HSD schools and support buildings. When a site has filled five to ten collection bags, they can submit a help ticket for the Facilities Moving Team to pick them up, weigh and record them. The school that has collected the most plastic film by the end of the challenge will be announced on Earth Day – April 22, 2018 – and will win a TREX bench.
What happens to that collected plastic? It will be sorted, shredded, and cleared of impurities like paper. The shreds are then melted and formed into pellets that can be made into other products. TREX recycles these pellets into outdoor decking material, fencing, doors, and windows.
Here is a list of what can be recycled:
- Grocery bags
- Bread bags
- Case overwrap
- Dry cleaning bags
- Newspaper sleeves
- Ice bags
- Wood pellet bags
- Ziploc and other closable bags
- Produce bags
- Bubble wrap
- Salt bags
- Cereal bags
All plastic must be clean, dry, and mostly free of food residue.
