Campus and Security Patrol Monitors Help to Ensure Safety
September 17, 2018 - Together with our security supervisor, Sgt. Alex Oh, our security patrol and campus monitors work hard to ensure the safety of our students, staff, community, and District facilities.
They came together on Wednesday, Sep. 12, to receive professional development on active listening and de-escalation techniques from a retired Hillsboro Police detective and a retired FBI agent, both of whom have backgrounds in hostage negotiations and youth-related fields. The training was intended to give the campus and night patrol monitors some tools to use on a daily basis as they are out and about on our campuses and properties, and at events.
Campus monitors are assigned to our middle and high schools, but also attend District activities outside of school hours. They collaborate with our school resource officers to maintain safe schools and to cultivate a respectful working and learning environment. Campus monitors must maintain good judgement and control of emotions in highly charged situations. Active listening and de-escalation skills are vitally important to the success of their student safety effort.
“We want students and staff to work together to find the most appropriate outcomes to these situations,” explained Sgt. Oh. “Keeping a level head during such encounters benefits everyone involved.”
