HSD Mariachi Una Voz Awards
April 8, 2019 - Congratulations are in order for HSD Mariachi Una Voz and its amazing and dedicated director, Dan Bosshardt! They have earned three notable awards recently:
- A Community Cultural Participation Grant of $1,980 from the Cultural Coalition of Washington County, which is helping the group prepare for their performance at the 15th Annual Latino Cultural Festival in downtown Hillsboro on Sunday, May 19.
- The Community Partner Award from the Metropolitan Youth Symphony (MYS), given to Dan for his work in establishing after-school violin classes for students at Lincoln Street and W.L. Henry Elementary Schools, coordinating the expansion of MYS’ Saturday ensemble program to Hillsboro, and for his mentorship and encouragement of students to become leaders in the community.
- The Schnitzer Wonder Award from the Oregon Symphony, given to Una Voz “...in recognition of [their] mission to inspire understanding, foster unity, and promote music education through a culturally responsive experience of the mariachi tradition.” The award comes with a $10,000 monetary prize, which is intended to further and expand Una Voz’ work.
The selection of Una Voz and Dan for these awards is summed up beautifully by Oregon Symphony President Scott Showalter: “We are proud to honor Mariachi Una Voz for their outstanding work inspiring young people to participate in music and celebrating the rich cultural heritage present in our region. Dan Bosshardt and his students are a brilliant example of the way music can empower our youth and build community.”
