State Rep. Janeen Sollman Tours HSD’s New Transportation and Support Services Building
Building includes bus and facilities maintenance, diesel mechanic CTE spaces
Hillsboro, Oregon (Aug. 18, 2020) – on Monday, Aug. 17, 2020, Oregon State Rep. Janeen Sollman visited the Hillsboro School District’s new Transportation and Support Services building, the latest project to be completed as part of the 2017 Bond.
“This building goes beyond my expectations,” Sollman exclaimed. “To see all the different parts of not only a fantastic working place for our staff members here in Hillsboro, but also for our students...is a win-win.”
Long an advocate for career-technical education, Sollman was especially pleased to tour the classroom and shop area for the district’s new diesel mechanic CTE program, with opportunities for students to observe and participate firsthand in in-house vehicle maintenance activities. About a third of the building is dedicated to bus and vehicle maintenance.
“I am so excited for this opportunity for students,” she said. “This is a learning lab and hands-on experience for the future.”
Sollman viewed areas for Transportation dispatch and routing staff, training rooms and offices. Outside are a bus wash, diesel and propane stations, and enough parking for up to 120 buses. Conduit has been laid for future electrical bus charging when it is needed. The district’s facilities maintenance and groundskeeping staff and equipment also will be housed in the new building, which includes a carpentry and paint shop.
Designed by BLRB Architects and built by Robinson Construction for a budget of $19.3 million, the new 49,000 sq. ft. building is located on NE Jacobson St. just north of Liberty High School. It is expected to serve as the district’s northern hub for bus transportation, while the existing facility on SE Walnut St. continues to serve the southern areas of the district, resulting in scheduling efficiencies. Accompanying Sollman on the tour was School Board member Mark Watson. Providing guidance were the district’s Capital Projects Officer Adam Stewart; Rick Cunningham, project manager from Cornerstone Management; and Josh Sierra, project superintendent from Robinson Construction.
