Superintendent Scott Announces New Principals and Other Administrative Changes
July 2, 2018 - Superintendent Mike Scott recently made the following administrative announcements for the 2018-19 school year:
Director of Student Services Sarah Crane
Sarah Walker, coordinator of Student Services, accepted a job at the Northwest Regional ESD as principal of both their new program for elementary-aged students with special needs and of the day treatment programs run by Lifeworks NW.
Upon learning of her departure, the District looked at some of the recent recommendations from principals, teachers, and classified leaders regarding how we can better serve and support our students with special needs. One of those ideas was around the leadership structure of the department and wanting to ensure there are leaders who have had experience as school administrators. To that end, the opening was converted to a director position, and Sarah Crane - current principal of Jackson Elementary School - was selected for the role.
Crane has her doctoral degree in educational leadership and has studied students with mental health diagnoses and how best to support them in school. She has served as both a special education coordinator and director at the Intermountain ESD, was principal of the Ione K-12 Community School, and has been the principal of Jackson since 2015. Crane’s experience and expertise will be integral to improving teaching and learning for students with special needs. Her leadership for equity and inclusive schools is proven, and the District looks forward to her continued leadership and support in her new role as director of Student Services.
Principal of Jackson Elementary School Kasia Gutierrez
Taking over as principal of Jackson Elementary School will be Kasia Gutierrez. Gutierrez has served as a teacher and literacy coach at Jackson since 2005, with the exception of a year spent as an instructional coach at Free Orchards Elementary School in 2015-16. Most recently, she has been a sixth-grade teacher and has team-taught math with fellow sixth-grade teacher Christa Pruss. Gutierrez has led professional learning communities (PLCs), delivered professional development to her colleagues, served as a substitute principal, and has participated in the District’s Future Leaders program. Gutierrez is skilled at assessing and differentiating for the needs of students, and is a strong instructional leader. She is a compassionate listener who is committed to building relationships with staff, families, and students, and ensuring that students have the skills and knowledge they need to be successful throughout their K-12 experience.
Coordinator of Bond Technology Integration Alano Ciliberto
Alano Ciliberto, current principal of Imlay Elementary School, will become the new coordinator of bond technology integration.* One of the key aspects of the District’s 2017 bond was a $30 million investment in technology to help ensure modern learning environments and experiences for all students. But technology and infrastructure alone will not be enough. A solid vision, implementation, integration and support plan is also critical. Ciliberto is uniquely positioned to provide that leadership. He is an instructional technology innovator and has long advocated for a position in which the focus is on schools, staff, and students and their successful use of technology to meet academic goals. This position will allow him to do just that. Ciliberto has been the principal of Imlay since 2015, and prior to that was a sixth-grade teacher and technology facilitator. He has also been trained in both STEM and arts integration. (*This position will be paid from bond proceeds.)
Principal Imlay Elementary School Jennifer McCalley
Taking over as principal of Imlay Elementary School will be Jennifer McCalley. McCalley is currently the principal of Faubion Pre-K through 8 in Portland Public Schools. She began her educational career in 1996 as an elementary school teacher at Chief Joseph and Ainsworth Elementary Schools in PPS. In 2011-12, she served as a principal intern at both Chief Joseph and Faubion, before becoming the assistant principal of Faubion in 2012. She transitioned to her current position as principal in 2016. At Faubion, McCalley launched an early childhood program, a “3 to PhD” initiative, a parent advisory group, and student affinity groups such as a Black Student Union. She also actively sought grants and partnered with higher education institutions to enhance programming and support for her students and school. A knowledgeable instructional leader who is committed to the success of all students and to closing the achievement gap, McCalley focuses on data-driven decision making and on ensuring the school culture is reflective and open to all. She is a relationship-builder who believes in regular communication with families, students, staff, and community partners.
Assistant Principal Hillsboro High School Kelly Cox
Hilhi assistant principal Courtney Leonard was selected as the principal of Charlemagne French Immersion Elementary School in Eugene. Taking her place will be Kelly Cox, current assistant principal at Glencoe High School. Cox began her educational career teaching high school Social Studies. She started out in the classroom at Madison High School in 2005-06, and then added the title of career pathways coordinator the following year. In the 2007-08 year, she was both coordinator at Madison and also a Social Studies teacher at Benson High School. In 2008-09, she was both an 8th grade teacher and grant coordinator back at Madison High. She moved to the Metropolitan Learning Center in 2009, where she taught middle school Social Studies and was the Synergy School Lead. From 2014 through 2016, Cox served as the dean of students at Roosevelt High School before transitioning to her current position at Glencoe in 2016. There, Cox has been active in fostering a culture of equity, and has served as a strong instructional leader.
Assistant Principal Glencoe High School Joe Painter
Taking Kelly’s place as assistant principal of Glencoe High School is Joe Painter, currently the school’s dean of students and also a member of the District’s Future Leaders program. Painter began his career in education as an advanced mathematics and social studies teacher at Hilhi in 2007. Over the course of his eleven years there, Painter mentored AmeriCorps volunteers, was the IB Middle Years Program coordinator, and served as the Math department coordinator from 2014-16. He transitioned to his current position at Glencoe in 2016. At Glencoe, Painter has implemented new policies and procedures to enhance student safety, organized school-wide events, and facilitated staff professional development. He has also stepped in as a substitute principal at the elementary and middle school levels.
Superintendent Scott voiced his confidence in the ability of each of these administrators to lead their communities and to serve their students in the years to come.
