January 20, 2020 - Hilhi has landed some impressive grants over the past few years, and the latest of those is a three-year, $75,000 grant awarded by LULAC National Education Service Centers, Inc. (LNESC) and The PepsiCo Foundation for the PepsiCo Sustainable STEM Explorers program.
A launch event was held in the Hilhi library for participating students and their parents on Wednesday, Jan. 15.
Twenty-five to thirty students, half of whom will be female, will participate in the STEM Explorers program each year. Facilitated by Hilhi’s new bilingual science teacher, Hilhi alum Jonathan Lopez-Arana, students will meet on Wednesdays and Thursdays for presentations, hands-on laboratory experiences, and technology-centered instruction designed by professionals at the Ford Company’s Partnership for Advanced Studies (Ford PAS) and the Education Development Center (EDC). They will also welcome female and/or minority guest speakers who are professionals in STEM fields, and will participate in off-campus field experiences.
The program is designed to engage students’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields through exposure to real-world STEM applications and problems; and to encourage them to pursue STEM-related pathways throughout high school and in college.
20 de enero, 2020 - Hilhi ha obtenido algunas subvenciones impresionantes durante los últimos años, y la última de ellas es una subvención de tres años de $75,000 otorgada por LULAC National Education Service Centers, Inc. (LNESC) y The Pepsi Foundation para el programa PepsiCo Sustainable STEM Explorers.
El miércoles, 15 de enero, se realizó un evento de lanzamiento en la biblioteca de Hilhi para los estudiantes participantes y sus padres.
Veinticinco a treinta estudiantes, la mitad de los cuales serán mujeres, participarán en el programa STEM Explorers cada año. Facilitado por el nuevo maestro bilingüe de ciencias de Hilhi y exalumno de Hilhi, Jonathan López-Arana, los estudiantes se reunirán los miércoles y jueves para presentaciones, experimentos prácticos de laboratorio e instrucción centrada en la tecnología diseñada por profesionales de Ford Company’s Partnership for Advanced Studies (Ford PAS) y Education Development Center (EDC). También recibirán oradores invitados femeninos y/o minoritarios que sean profesionales en las áreas STEM y participarán en experiencias de campo fuera del plantel.
El programa está diseñado para atraer el interés de los estudiantes en las áreas de ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas (STEM, por sus siglas en inglés) a través de la exposición a aplicaciones y problemas de STEM del mundo real; y motivarlos a seguir caminos relacionados con STEM en la escuela preparatoria y en la universidad.
