Superintendent Mike Scott Welcomes New Equity Director Karen Pérez-Da Silva
March 26, 2019 - Today Superintendent Mike Scott welcomed Karen Pérez-Da Silva as Hillsboro School District's new Equity Director in the following letter to staff...
Dear Admin Team,
As you may know, we created a new administrative position to lead our equity work and oversee our bilingual programs, and have been actively recruiting candidates. Today, I’m pleased to announce that Karen Pérez-Da Silva has been selected for the job. She will begin her new role on July 1, 2020.
Since 2017, Karen has worked for the Eugene School District as their equity, instruction, and partnerships administrator. In that role, she works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to address inequities in systems and policies to affect positive, student-centered outcomes. She also oversees bilingual programs and created a long-term plan for language development in the district.
Prior to her current position, Karen worked for the Beaverton School District’s Human Resources and Multilingual departments as a community networker and mentor/coach, respectively. Within Human Resources, she co-developed, analyzed, and implemented the Teach for Beaverton program in collaboration with Oregon State University and Beaverton School District administrators, teachers, community members, and graduate students. Within the Multilingual department, she mentored and coached Dual Language teachers and delivered professional development.
Fluent in both English and Spanish, Karen began her career as an ESL/Bilingual and Dual Language classroom teacher in 1999. She earned her Doctorate in Educational Leadership in 2016. She is a member of the Oregon Association of Latino Administrators, where she has served on the Board since 2017, as well as the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators. She is also currently a member of ODE’s Emergent Bilingual Workgroup - developing future state initiatives for emergent bilingual students and their families.
Aside from her impressive achievements, Karen comes to us highly recommended. We are thrilled to have her leading such important work in our district.
Please join me in congratulating Karen and welcoming her to our administrative team.
