Dear Free Orchards Staff and Families,
I am writing today to share some extremely sad news. We learned this morning that fourth-grade teacher Kerensa Schantz died suddenly and unexpectedly last night. Out of respect for the family, we are not sharing details at this time. Families of fourth-grade students were called in advance of this message going out, and students will be informed in person tomorrow.
This news will affect our students in different ways. Some may not have known Ms. Schantz very well and may not be as impacted, while others may experience a great deal of shock, sadness, anxiety, and anger. Feeling sad is a normal response to any loss. Any death, even if the person wasn’t known to you, can bring up thoughts and feelings related to other losses.
We encourage you to send your child(ren) to school tomorrow, as grieving and processing feelings together in one space is the best way to cope with these situations. We will have members of our district’s Flight Team - a group of specially-trained counselors and mental health specialists - on site to provide support to staff and students.
If you feel your child needs additional support, please feel free to reach out to our staff or contact the WA County Crisis Line:

Ms. Schantz was a beloved and important member of our team and her unexpected passing is heartbreaking for all of us. It will take time to heal, but we will get through it together.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to her family, friends, and all who knew her.
Respectfully,

Atentamente,
